What is the challenge your project is going to address and how does it connect to the theme of 'How can improvement be used to reduce delays accessing health and care services'?

Proud2bOps #SharingElectiveStuff is an existing partnership with operational managers that has grown a community to provide practical, boots on the ground operational solutions to the delivery of care.  It is a finalist in HSJ Awards.

We wish to amplify this mechanism to #Proud2bOpsImprovingStuff.  We intend to do this in partnership with the National Improvement Director Network. Connecting, learning and shaping together as an improvement and operational professional community, provides a fantastic opportunity to realise improvement towards the design and delivery of care.

#Proud2bOpsImprovingStuff will focus on national and system level access challenges related to the challenge of reducing patient waiting times and increasing access for the most vulnerable.  Our approach will amplify real-time learning and knowledge exchange.

Often the relationships and understanding between Improvement and Operational Leaders lack depth, appreciation and engagement.  We intend to bridge that gap and take it right to the centre of reducing patient waiting lists.

What does your project aim to achieve?

Our shared Objectives:

  1. Increase understanding and appreciation of each other’s professional expertise
  2. Create safe, supportive, innovative learning spaces for both Ops and Improvement managers on a deliberate and regular basis
  3. To build on known operational practical methods to support front line delivery and improve access for patients, by reducing speciality level waiting lists
  4. To optimise the power of relationships, support Ops managers in improving front line care and deliver the national operational framework and NHSE priorities
  5. To provide a mentor and buddying offer for both of the Networks, further strengthening relationships, trust and sharing of knowledge and solutions for prioritised patient waiting initiatives
  6. To focus on 2-3 improvement interventions both at an organisational and system level.  CORE20+, UEC, Virtual Wards, Strength-Based leadership
  7. To lead national conversations, supporting the connectivity and expectation of Ops and Improvement – further socialising and supporting implementation and impact of the new NHS Improvement Approach

How will the project be delivered?

Proud2bOps and the IDN is experienced in designing, leading and improving Networks and Professional Communities.

Proud2bOps has successfully grown over the past 5 years and is a well established and credible network.  Respected across professionals and government bodies.  Proud2bOps also exists in each of the  7 NHSE Regions, thus presenting further opportunity for test, learning and spread.

The IDN is evolving, yet has clearly demonstrated growth in membership.  Numerous testing from Proud2bOps and the IDN has proven that this opportunity is hugely welcomed, needed and where energy is high.  This is a gear change for both Networks and to increase impact and collaboration.

Feedback strongly suggests that we can truly benefit from this initiative and lead improvements together and amplify design a delivery to reduce patient waiting times and ensure adoption at an organisational, system and regional level.

Credibility through peer leadership is an incredible strength we must optimise.

How is your project going to share learning?

We will ensure learning and development is at the heart of our design and approach.

  • We will be an inclusive partnership, ensuring connectivity nationally, regionally and at a system level
  • We will provide staged feedback that will be shared across the IDN, Proud2bOps and socialised wider through the national partnerships already in place for both Networks: Health Foundation/Q-Community, NHS Confed, NHS Providers, DHSC and NHSE – and many more
  • We will produce a citizen level insight in to our partnership and development and where relevant, involve patient and people representatives to the areas of work we prioritise
  • By the very existence of this partnership, we will ensure our approach is evidence based, culturally mindful and applies operational insight and practical realisation to our work as a Network Team.

As a partnership we will define our principles and we will be held to account by our members and partners.

How you can contribute

  • - We would like the community to support us by getting involved and turning up in to the spaces we create
  • - Where we require specialist expertise and experience, whether that is sector related, people related or system related, act as a buddy or mentor for our network members
  • - Co-Production leads to respectfully challenge and support our approach and thinking
  • - Where known 'real' and 'tangible' practical solutions exist, bring them to the attention of this community
  • - Support us to help keep this simple, real and drive impact for our people
  • - We welcome support from socialisation and connectivity platforms to help further connect, spread and learn e.g. Hexitime, LifeQI
  • Of course, like any new intervention and improvement initiative, we don't know what we don't know. Therefore we need to be fluid and adapt and we are confident that the community can help us do that and learn from it.

  1. So excited to be involved in this, Operations is the powerhouse of delivery often overlooked and really vital to successful change and clearly defining QI aims that are achievable and impactful.

    1. Thank you Charlotte and your experience and leadership to help us move this forward will be most valuable! Teamwork

  2. Definitely support this initiative. Ops and improvement collaboration is essential to delivering the best care possible for patients and for creating a culture of positive change. This initiative will bring national and regional connections and I know will focus on pragmatic - what can we do together strategically as well as operationally. Full support from me

    1. Awesome-thank you Petra…

spot on-lead both strategically and operationally. Hand in Glove.

      thank you for your support.

  3. I would like to offer up Hexitime as a knowledge exchange platform to host, measure and deliver the online community space you need for this. We can also use it to ideate around the focus areas. We're launching a refreshed v.2 of the platform that will be ready to support this project when the funding is in.

    1. John - that sounds awesome - yes!

What an great example of colloborative working and creativity

  8. I think it would be good to connect in with how the previous successful W Community idea of the design collaboratives which can drive this operationally. Notts being a good example and the CoP as a simple approach to this.

    1. Thank you Lynn - we would welcome engagement and involvement in our design stage and learning from others.

Please get involved if we are successful.

    2. That was meant to say Q community not W!

  9. I can see ops being a key element in improving flow in Trusts but can you say a bit more about how this project would help in reducing waiting lists or improving access to care?

    1. Hello Darren

We have further updated our idea to attempt to respond to your curiosity.

I trust it is recognised that operational managers and leaders should be at the heart of design and delivery and often the delivery is more so and the design is less so.

#Proud2bOpsImprovingStuff will allow Improvement and Operational experts to drill in to the wicked area and therefore challenge in reducing patient waiting times.   It will allow a space and build trust where colleagues can get underneath the issues, the challenges, the reality and together, shape what improvement could look like, what is achievable and importantly - what is escalated as a collective community to secure, support, influence and insight at the highest level.

There are areas already in the pot to focus on; Theatres, Virtual Ward, Strength-Based development.  Together we will determine the area of greatest need and work tirelessly together to improve for our patients.   From here we will spread,  share practical insight and mentor and support peers and Trusts to adopt and adapt to help improve their patient waiting times challenges.

Thank you Darren - we trust this helps and demonstrates the amazing opportunity we have here - that needs and would value investment to allow it to safely lift-off!

      Emma

    2. Hello Darren, yes of course.  This approach is about truly getting underneath with practical insight and collaboration of doing the doing, the shop floor, the issues, the real practical elements that Ops need to know to help them move forward. It is about peers leading and supporting each other, mentoring each other.

From there, to have built trust, safety, respect and therefore the energy to get stuck in to something practical and that matters for the majority.

Theatres, lived experiences of managing waiting lists, scheduling patients, coupled with expert Improvement leaders, nudging, being curious, providing structure and methodology with measurement and assurance - something often lost in the reactive world of Ops.
