What is the challenge your project is going to address and how does it connect to the theme of 'How can we improve across system boundaries?

ABUHB neuro-developmental (ND) service based in Gwent carries out assessments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) for children and young people aged 0 – 18 years.   The assessment process is comprised of steps that include gathering of developmental history, child observations, school observations and ADHD tests and the aim is to complete this within a timeline of four months.

Currently the only communication process is via telephone, letter or email.  We have undertaken some invaluable co-production work with parents since 2022 and one of the main concerns raised was delayed communication in informing parents as to where their child is on the pathway.  The design of a digital tool that would enable parents / carers to log on and know when the next appointment might be or that the information and report is being concluded would immensely reduce frustration and the anxious waiting.

What does your project aim to achieve?

The project will aim to deliver an online digital tool for parents to log on and at any moment, be informed of their child’s position on the neuro-developmental pathway.

Our objectives include:

  • Up to date information readily available 24 hours per day for parents to access and be reassured that their child’s needs are being met
  • Reducing the barriers for parents / carers in accessing information about their child’s current assessment
  • Improving quality and communication processes within the ABUHB ND service
  • Ensuring maximum reach to all families whose child is currently undertaking a neuro-developmental assessment
  • Improve patient experience for families
  • Allow for feedback from families to embed continuous improvement to the tool

How will the project be delivered?

Recruitment of a project manager who will take the lead on linking with the ABUHB Digital Communications Team and researching to external sources in regards to the development of this project.

Collaboration with the current parent co-production group and Health Board professionals would be key to ensuring the project is delivered to meet the aims.

Training in regards to the use of the digital tool will be provided in the form of webinars and online resources / user guides available to parents and carers

How is your project going to share learning?

ABUHB would welcome sharing this across the Q Community and other Health Boards in Wales.  We will undertake an evaluation facilitated by the parent co-production group after 12 months of the digital tool being in use and share the findings across existing networks including Welsh Government and the Regional Partnership Board meetings.

  1. Happy to connect you with colleagues in CTM who are also engaged in this work. Important to address waiting times for families

  2. Interesting project, in a field With such a range of clinical data being gathered. I particularly like the patient and family experience aspect of the intended outcomes. Good luck!

  3. Great project. I wonder if another measurable benefit would be less requirement to contact primary care about where the child is on the waiting list. Is there an opportunity to enable parents to access useful  whilst they are waiting, through the digital tool?

    Hi Christopher.

We've made a child development app for parents in Torbay and South Devon, which is available on Connect plus.  It's got tips from other parents on supporting developmental need.  We also have a tracker on this and were hoping it could be used as a record, but this bit is clunky to use. I would be keen to collaborate and share experiences, and think this is something that would be welcomed nationwide.
