HI everyone, I’m new in this SIG. It looks like it has lain dormant for a bit – anyone up for a resurrection – or please correct me if I’m wrong? I’m always on the lookout for new books to read… and accountability to make me read them . Does anyone have any ideas for a starter?

I’d love to host a conversation about To Obama by Jeanne-Marie Laskas. I’m really keen to explore how the thoughts about leadership and systematic yet personal conversations with the American public apply to health and care services in the UK and Ireland. Anyone else fancy it? Would September suit?
-
I would really support this Heather. I see lots of conversations around systems change and integration but so much less about engaging in conversations with the public about the changes that need to happen.
I would be in for this – great to see planning forward – gives us chance to get copies and read with bit more leisure.
Good if this could be…Read more-
I’m in too, end of September sounds good? Thanks for suggesting Heather

Looks like we’ve got some interest so let us confirm we will have a conversation about To Obama at the end of September. Happy reading!

Hi Heather, the book looks fascinating and I’d be keen to join this discussion.

I have been wanting to read “Brave New Work” by Aaron Dignan. Is anyone interested in reading this?
-
Wow, just checked it out….yep, Im in. Given a long enough time…?
-
Awesome, how quickly are you able to get the book? We can read it in stages and reflect. Part One is 50 pages, when do you think you can read that by?
-
-
I’ve ordered it too and would like to join in
-
I’m in too. Will get hold of it and join in. Thanks for suggesting Allison
-
Me too. Just ordered it – thanks for suggesting. Are we going to set up a call for 8 July or shall we share reflections on here?

Hi everyone – given that it’s a month since I posted, I can see how this can easily drift lol. I have set up a poll to help us choose a book: https://take.quiz-maker.com/poll4274068x2fCe4430-135
I suggest we make this a lunchtime event, but every 2 months to give us time to read. How does that suit?-
Yes, it does drift sometimes 😂 it is known!
Lemme use some shouldertapping here! Some people who previously mentioned they’d be interested 🙂
@laurajaneplayforth @wendystobbs @clarissasorlie
I’m keen to help here if you folks need any logistical setup!
-
I was hoping this could be an asychronous reading group, I don’t feel I can commit to a set timeframe for reading something when I have lots of other books and projects on the go!

BRAVE NEW WORK PART 1 REFLECTIONS:
Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying the summer. How’s reading going? It’s been slow for me but I finally got through part 1. I quite like the history of how our management process/structures are in place. It provides some context into “how did we become like this”. And then it ends with status quo bias and I…Read more-
Hi Allison. Thank you so much for suggesting this book. It hadn’t been on my radar before. I found the connections between Taylorism, Gantt charts seem to reflect my experience of many change efforts over the last 20 years or so. And I am definitely attracted to People Positive, Complexity Conscious ways of working. It reminded me that once…Read more

How is anyone else getting on with Brave New Work? I’ve got a new team starting to work together over the next couple of weeks and I’ve got excited about a number of ideas relating to purpose, authority, meetings and membership from this book. Some in the team will be surprised….wish me luck!
-
-
Have to admit, I’ve not been able to keep up with reading it due to other commitments but am about to go on leave for 2 weeks and taking it with me. Will be very interesting to hear your experiences of trying out a few of the book’s concepts with your new team – best of luck!
-
So…I’ve now had a go at trying out some of the ideas in Brave New Work. Context is a team of 5 individuals, two of whom brand new to the team/org, all of us work extremely part-time in this time and have multiple other jobs, our work together has to currently be totally virtual and we’ve got some short deadlines with important deliverables. I’m…Read more

Hi, I hope you are ok. For a whole range of reasons I have not given this club as much time as I should. I have written posts/messages in my head time and time again but the nub of it is… I remain keen to have the opportunity to discuss books/reading with other Q members AND would really like some help to coordinate it.

Hello fellow readers,
I thought I’d share a couple of books that I’m interested in reading, hoping you’ll do the same. Maybe there’s scope for another book club / event? If not, maybe just a little list of good books?
Radical Help, Hilary Cottam. Been on my list for a while, has anyone come across it/read it?

Hey there, book enthusiasts! In a month we’ll explore the book ‘How to: Be More Pirate’ by Sam Conniff and Alex Barker- a blueprint for making ‘good trouble’, that includes experiences drawn from health care. Register here.
Funnily enough, we’ve got a couple of book discussions outside this SIG planned for 2023 — hope you folks will follow us…Read more

Dear Heather – thank you for the invitation. Would love to join the proposed conversation. I really enjoyed reading the book (thanks for the recommendation). Its just a great and practical example of one of the most powerful people in the world finding a way to keep connected with the real life experiences of people. I wonder if this example…Read more

Hi Maureen. If there are no other takers for a conversation about this why don’t we use it as an excuse to schedule a 1-1 catchup?

Dear Heather
What a great idea (apologies I am only responding now!). I would love a chat. Fridays are generally good for me in the afternoon – if you like to suggest some times that might work for you. I can set up a Zoom or CISCOWebEx or MS teams call then we can see each other which would be so much nicer. Really look forward to…Read more

Hello everyone, you should be getting your books soon!
Great questions on how to do this. I’m thinking we can do a mix of synchronous/asynchronous discussion. We can use this discussion board as we read through the book and can share our relfections. Once we are finished we can meet-up via Zoom to discuss overall reflections? We can aim to have…Read more -

Hi Karen, I would definitely be up for a reading club!!
HI Karen definitely up for a refresh too…my current reading is some of the Brene Brown leadership related ones…so could suggest ‘Dare to Lead’ if you’ve not read it already?
Hey Wendy! Just re-read that after a long while.
And here’s a very direct invitation: Helen Sanderson, who’s a certified Dare To Lead trainer is giving this decision-making toolkit call in just over a week, thought you might be interested 🙂 https://q.health.org.uk/event/q-liberating-structures-user-group-3/
Thanks for resurrecting this – I’m always looking to swap recommendations and discuss books!
Have you read Turn the Ship Around by David Marquet? Or New Power by Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms? They’re my most recent reads, both excellent.
Next on my list:
– Start with Why (Simon Sinek)
– Radical Candor (Kim Scott)
– Leading Change (John…Read more
