BRAVE NEW WORK PART 1 REFLECTIONS:
Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying the summer. How’s reading going? It’s been slow for me but I finally got through part 1. I quite like the history of how our management process/structures are in place. It provides some context into “how did we become like this”. And then it ends with status quo bias and I can relate to the difficulty in getting 10% better but when we aim for 10x, we can get really creative and innovative solutions – must get away from this.

It is an interesting time (covid world now) to read this book. I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts reflecting on the “new normal” and what we are learning from slowing down, and changes in the work environment. I’ve heard many say that we were in a mental health crisis pre-covid, and now is the time to address these issues. Mental health encompasses many things, including workplace environments and stress. Now is the time to redefine what our workplace looks like the relationships between us and our colleagues, and our “customers”. Now is a great time to redefine quality care.

What has jumped out for you? looking forward to hearing your thoughts. This book has been siting on my bookshelf unopened for many months so thank you for reading with me. There’s quite a bit to digest in this book. Let’s aim to finish this by end of August? is that reasonable?

    • Hi Allison. Thank you so much for suggesting this book. It hadn’t been on my radar before. I found the connections between Taylorism, Gantt charts seem to reflect my experience of many change efforts over the last 20 years or so. And I am definitely attracted to People Positive, Complexity Conscious ways of working. It reminded me that once (several employers ago) I set out to count the number of meetings in the organisation focused on quality/clinical governance and stopped counting when I got to 93…I actively chose not to calculate the resource involved for fear it might be Freedom of Information-able… what a level of Organisational Debt. I think Organisational Debt is the concept that has most jumped out to me so far….. looking forward to getting more into the practical suggestions that are promised….
What have others agreed or disagreed with so far?

      • How is anyone else getting on with Brave New Work? I’ve got a new team starting to work together over the next couple of weeks and I’ve got excited about a number of ideas relating to purpose, authority, meetings and membership from this book. Some in the team will be surprised….wish me luck!

    • Have to admit, I’ve not been able to keep up with reading it due to other commitments but am about to go on leave for 2 weeks and taking it with me. Will be very interesting to hear your experiences of trying out a few of the book’s concepts with your new team – best of luck!

    • So…I’ve now had a go at trying out some of the ideas in Brave New Work. Context is a team of 5 individuals, two of whom brand new to the team/org, all of us work extremely part-time in this time and have multiple other jobs, our work together has to currently be totally virtual and we’ve got some short deadlines with important deliverables. I’m trying out Team Charter and A User Guide to Me from the Membership section of the Operating System. I’ve uploaded word documents of the questions to a shared space for joint editing. We’ve had two 90 minute virtual meetings where I’ve combined a range of activities to get to know one another better with beginning to draft these documents. I’m trying to combine synchronous and asynchronous communications given our working patterns. I think they have got us fairly rapidly to a place where we are starting to deliver and – in particular – get clarity about what we need to get more clear about. Picked a few of the user manual questions to chat about which was positive and seemed fairly honest. Some team members have got stuck in to completing the whole document, others not yet…I guess the proof will be in the pudding of how much we come back to revisit, reference and apply these.

Has anyone else got plans to or experiences from applying ideas in this book?
