The Compassion Paradox: making sense of a difficult work environment together

In this interactive session attendees explored two Liberating Structures; '1-2-4-all' and 'Wicked Questions'.

20 Apr 2023
16:30 – 17:30

  • How can we create environments that support client and colleagues’ wellbeing and still be functional as a clinical space?
  • How can we show our patients they are important and simultaneously cope with the demand?
  • How can a manager role model wellbeing time for themselves and simultaneously support their team to do the same?
  • How can we collect data to assess program quality and simultaneously excite staff to use the data for improvement and decision making when they are so stressed and anxious?
  • How do we offer compassion and care to enable us to ease the suffering of others and simultaneously nurture the wellbeing of staff to remain compassionate in the face of continued exposure to others suffering?

These are just some of the ‘Wicked Questions’ uncovered by participants at a recent active learning session. This session was facilitated using two different Liberating Structures; ‘1-2-4-all’ to explore the ‘Wicked Questions’, presented by the Compassion Paradox.

We connected and shared using the Liberating Structure ‘1-2-4-all’:

  • Reflected alone (1min)
  • In pairs shared your reflection and built your ideas (2min)
  • In fours shared your ideas from pairs and built those ideas further (4min)
  • Shared with the main group – what is one idea that stood out (5min)

We also used Jamboards, watch this YouTube video on ‘How to use Jam Board’.

We have given some examples of ‘Wicked Questions’ above; at the sessions we decided which ones we wanted to have a go at considering solutions to.

We also covered how we can relax using all our senses, which is something we can practice ourselves and use in our teams.

While we work in different settings, we may find we are facing similar challenges, and find this cross fertilisation of ideas helpful in whatever quality improvement goals we or our organisations are pursuing at present.

This session was organised by the Staff Wellbeing and Quality Health Care Special Interest Group.
