About the session

Start Well, End Well came about in the early stages of Covid-19 when clinical teams faced significant disruption, having to respond to challenging circumstances and high uncertainty, whilst still providing quality care to patients.

A diverse team of quality improvement, clinical, service improvement and psychology professionals came together to create a framework that could support the wellbeing of these clinical teams under high pressure and build team connection, compassion and psychological safety.

Start Well, End Well is essentially a three step team procedure:

  1. A check-in at the beginning of the work day, functioning as an enhanced safety briefing.
  2. A peer-to-peer debrief or ‘pit stop’ at any point doing the day when coming together to co-create a plan for challenging situations is needed.
  3. A check-out at the end of the day, done colleague-to-colleague or in small huddles, to reflect on the day and support the transition from work to home.

In this session we learned more about the initiative and its learnings from Vardeep Deogan; a Quality Improvement practitioner, part of the Start Well, End Well core team.

Vardeep qualified as a diagnostic radiographer in 2000 working clinically until 2015 before transitioning into Quality Improvement and patient safety. She currently works as a Senior Continuous Improvement Manager in an NHS hospital in Bristol.

Over the years, her work has involved supporting individuals and teams with improvement work using a coaching approach, leading to Vardeep qualifying as an executive coach, with a particular focus on behavioural change. In addition to her improvement role, Vardeep also supports trust-wide organisational development often working in collaboration with the staff psychology team to design bespoke team-based interventions.

Start Well, End Well was supported by Q Exchange. You can read more about the initiative and its process here.
