I just got into a quick Twitter chat with Tom Geraghty, who does a fab Psychological Safety newsletter.
He mentioned that he “very, very often” uses the Liberating Structure called TRIZ in his Psychological Safety workshops.
The specific invitation question he likes to use for the first part of TRIZ is: “How would you create a culture of fear…Read more

HSJ article claims to identify key reason continuous quality improvement doesn’t deliver
The article ‘Time for our ICSs to embrace continuous improvement’, by KPMG’s Russell Jewell, warns that a key ‘stumbling block’ to continuous quality improvement (CQI) is that it is “still not particularly well understood”.

The recommendation is ‘incredibly tightly defined standard work processes that determine how the health and care system operates’. I don’t think we need to look to America and UMass Memorial Health to know that! I’ve bee preaching it for the last & years – not that most people listen. Just scroll down the page and look for a comment on any of my…Read more

Whilst I believe that the NHS and patient safety can benefit from taking significant steps towards standardisaiton to improve relibility … the description of ‘incredibly tightly defined standard work processes’ is frankly out of keeping and out of step with the reality and challenge of delivering healthcare in many settings with the system c…Read more

This is my fir…Read more

I don’t think we need to look to America and UMass Memorial Health to know that! I’ve bee preaching it for the last 8 years – not that most people listen. I don’t entirely agree with Russell. Hi Tom – thanks for your thoughtful response.
It’s all somewhat hard to follow for a non-practitioner, like me. You say you’ve been preaching this for 8 years, but then also that it won’t work in healthcare.
Basically his approach to standard work processes isn’t quite right for healthcare – but his focus on the importance of work processes in…Read more

Yes, I’ve been preaching documenting work processes. See Process visualisation SIG. Russell refers to Standard Work Processes. I talk about Standard Processes. I explain that the Work is split into two areas. Standard Work and Standard Processes are not the same as I describe them. Yes, somewhat hard to follow. I do agree that his focus on WAD is…Read more
