I tend to find Cynefin both useful and confusing. I have found that helping people in organisations learn about complexity very helpful to their understanding of how to understand and change organisations. So I wrote a piece that might be a bit more straightforward. Any thoughts that you might have would be welcome for rewriting it!…Read more

    • Thanks John,

I’ll be sure to check it out.
I understand what you mean by both useful and confusing. There are some colleagues that talk about complexity and they are really talking about Chaos theory. This is different to the term used in Cynefin which when pointed out to me, helped me think about it differently but also bring in those ideas -…Read more

  • I thought that people here might know of who might value this…
This is a workshop for anyone working with service design or change, and are wishing to deepen their understanding and practice of systems thinking and complexity that reflects what organisations are striving for with today’s complex challenges.
We might know about redesigning…Read more

When you say staff leading the project, do you mean co-design?
    And have you seen this?

    • This project is a great example of co-design and project management. The method was right for the application. All design and re-design need a degree of co-design, careful consideration is needed to identify at witch points in the design process co-design is used. Certainly at specification, design review and trials. This issue and some of my…Read more

Thanks for spotting and posting this. Oh gosh, where do we start? This was my comment, what are others views?
    .
It is good to see the word ‘complex’ in a blog like this. Evidence show that complexity is a very different proposition to deal with than logical complicated services. You highlight the need for different approaches and I certainly echo…Read more

    • I agree with your comments and like the Apolitical article. I think that the NHS need to employ professional Designers and Engineers to re-design their Services. We can no longer expect front line staff to do the job as suggested in the LTP. QI will certainly not do the job. More people need to be talking about this. Any ideas anyone?

  • We seem to find understanding, and then incorporating complexity into our approaches, so difficult. I have found that many of the places that we go to to learn more about complexity seem to be difficult to understand,

So I wrote what I have learned about complexity, in a way that is hopefully easily understandable. Designed for managers and those…Read more

Apologies for anyone seeing this post in more than one forum!
In 2019 I ran an integrated ICS prototype in heath and social care with a county council and NHS trust. This approach uses systems thinking as a way to underpin how customer centred services can be redefined.  Such approaches with progressive public and private sector organisations now…Read more

I thought I would share my thoughts from reading what I have read. It seems that the aim is to make the pathway more simple and make more efficient.
It all looks like a systems dynamics approach, taking lean tools and apply to this.
I have an alternative view of some of what you are trying to do.
    1. It seems to be focused on the care flow, at the…Read more
