The award-winning Flow Coaching Academy (FCA) combines practical quality improvement tools and team coaching skills. Both are used in their unique ‘Big Room’ model of team coaching, which brings together a range of people who are connected to a pathway or in a system.

This in-person Visit brought together FCA’s practical coaching tools and the FCA roadmap, with live examples of how the methodology has been applied from coaches they have trained and worked with.

Attendees brought a specific improvement challenge they are facing to work on with the support of FCA coaches throughout the day.

You can find out more about the FCA and their work on their website.

Why Flow Coaching Academy?

Built from within the NHS for the NHS, the FCA started out in 2016 at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and was funded by the Health Foundation to replicate and scale up their work.

In 2019 and 2020 they won the BMJ award for ‘Innovation in Quality Improvement Team of the Year’.

They have trained over 500 coaches and supported the creation of over 150 Big Rooms to create sustainable improvements across the NHS by focusing on how to harness the potential of others to create change. Their ‘Improving with People First’ programme exists to enable staff in every healthcare organisation to continuously improve patient care and experience.

The FCA runs a 12 month action learning training course for pairs of coaches from within a patient care pathway. The core elements of the course include easy access online e-learning, virtual meetings, peer support groups, Big Rooms, and a tried and tested approach to enable organisations to achieve their service and quality improvement goals.
