Find out more

This exciting in-person Visit to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is hosted by their Director of Continuous Improvement, Dr Ailsa Brotherton and the continuous improvement team. It will showcase how they have created a new system and culture of improvement and will include:

  • An overview of their improvement journey and strategy, their approach to measurement and impact, the lessons they have learnt so far, and what they would do differently next time.
  • An introduction to the three models of improvement they use at macro, meso and micro level:
    – Engineering Better Care and IHI Breakthrough Series Collaboratives for whole system improvement
    – Flow coaching academy for clinical pathway based improvement, e.g. frailty, stroke, cancer pathways
    – Micro System Coaching Academy  for improvement work on the wards and clinical departments
  • A deep dive into these and a chance to see them live in action with teams across the Trust.
  • A chance to network with other improvement leads across the country and hear about how they are embedding improvement within their organisations.

If you are new into an improvement role or thinking about next steps to mature your improvement work, this will be a great Visit to join.

Why Lancashire Teaching Hospitals?

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has adopted an ambitious approach to its improvement work, and has created a structured approach to three main ways of embedding improvement within its work at system (macro), pathway (meso) and individual ward and department level (micro) levels.

They have recently been shortlisted in five categories for the Health Service Journal Patient Safety awards for their work to build a safety culture, improve cancer, their Microsystem Coaching Academy, the innovation community healthcare hub and their work to improve medication safety.

The team also have an innovative digital patient flow improvement programme in the early stages of testing which they will share during the Visit, that is anticipated to deliver a 10% reduction in length of stay.
