Equity focused quality improvement: a Q conversation

Are you interested in how quality improvement can be used to promote health equity? In this session, we were joined by Dr John Ford and Dr Lucy Johnson, researchers on this topic at Queen Mary University of London, to learn more and share experiences and opinions.

4 Dec 2023
12:00 – 13:00

The session

Drawing from an ongoing 5 year research project, this session provided a space for crucial conversations to take place about ‘what works’ when trying to do Equity Focused Quality Improvement (EF-QI).

Through their research, Dr John Ford and Dr Lucy Johnson aim to understand why certain types of QI projects improve or worsen healthcare inequalities. The ultimate goal is to develop new training and resources with patients and staff to help hospitals use QI to promote health equity.

At this relatively early stage in the research process, they want to hear experiences and opinions and have an open conversation about the problem, and the potential for positive change. The hope is that this conversation can be the beginning of an ongoing collaborative relationship between Q improvers, and this research agenda.

Here’s what was covered in the session:

  • A presentation on the research project so far, outlining its approach to equity focused quality improvement
  • Questions and comments
  • Breakout rooms with facilitated discussion points
  • Feedback and open conversation in the main room
