Hi,
I work in General Practice in the North West. Persistent pain and mental health is a very common issue for my patients. I would like to learn more about this in order to best support my patients. -

Hi Tracy, thank you for your welcome. I am keen to participate in this exciting Q Lab Project in its 2nd year. My previous work with an MSK charity highlighted the impact persistent pain has an mental health and wellbeing. I am passionate about peer support and the importance of collaboration and co-production. I look forward to sharing time with…Read more

Hi Christine! And welcome to the group. It is great to hear about your experience working at an MSK charity and how that work highlighted the link between persistent pain and mental health. If you have any resources about this which you would be able to share, please do share them on this group!

Hi Hannah, thanks for your welcome! Sorry for delay getting back to you, I had to leave for Manchester. I support my aunt’s care some weekends.
On my return, I will look out some resources to share. I look forward to the webinar on the 2nd October and I’ll contact Sarah to confirm this.

I’ve just started lecturing at UOB (I didn’t think I’d be doing this again!) and have been looking for some ideas for discussing the ‘customer service’ side of Service Design. I remembered the 2nd Q Lab. I’ve just had another look at the output from this Lab and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. Not only that but detail of how we worked to…Read more

Hi Tom,
Seems ages since we last spoke. In Worcestershire, we are presently preparing for the change to ICS on 1 July. The legislation setting up the ICS contains several clauses that make it mandatory for patient and public views to be taken into account when designing services.
My email address is now dtrig@hotmail.comBest

That’s great to hear Tom – thanks for letting us know.

Sharing our research insights and next steps:
Hi everyone!
At the Lab’s workshop in February, we shared the insights and learning that have emerged from the research we have conducted to date. We invited people in the workshop to provide feedback on the findings to date – if you were not at the workshop, you can still review this work and add you…Read moreRealtimeBoard | Online Whiteboard for Visual CollaborationRealtimeBoard | Online Whiteboard for Visual Collaboration-
Hi jo
This is really great. thank you for this and it was good to chat last week. Is this possible to get as a pdf download so that I can read later or offline?

Deepak-
Hi Deepak. No problem – the research insights are also available as a pdf here:
https://q.health.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Q-Lab-research-findings.pdf
It’s worth taking a look at the virtual whiteboard if you can, as we’ve added the comments and feedback we received at the workshop. You can also add any thoughts you might have.

Developing service principles:
At the Lab’s workshop on 14 February, we spent time discussing some draft service principles. We wanted to consider if this could act as a useful tool for designing consistently high-quality services, and provide a meaningful way of distilling and carrying our most important findings about people’s needs when the…Read more

Hi Jo, Thanks for the update. I would like to stay involved with this project, if it works for the majority of volunteers would you be able to have the webinar on the 22nd(Friday) instead..?.
Kind regards,
Dinesh-
Hi Dinesh – glad you’d like to be involved. I’ll contact you again with dates once we have a few more takers!

-
Here are my comments on the new ‘draft principles’:
I think the ‘we statements’ and service assessment questions are very useful; constructive and practical.
Articulation of the ‘we statements’ to service users could help facilitate and promote the therapeutic alliance.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi all, I’m keen to be involved in this second Q Lab, partly because I valued the experience in the first Q Lab, and mainly because it applies to my personal position of providing long term support to a close friend who experiences disabling back pain alongside mental health problems.

Welcome @karenmachin! We’re really glad you’re able to join us for the second Lab project

Thanks Tracy. A short introduction: I think that mental health is a growing issue especially in young people. My interest is in early detection and prevention of the situation getting worse. Two national initiatives that I support in this area are Patient Self Management (PSM) and Social Prescribing, both of which address mental health in a number…Read more

Thanks for your introduction @thomasjohnrose and for sharing the ideas you developed through Q Exchange. The Lab this year will focus peoples experiences of common mental health problems and persistent pain, but I’m sure there is much to be learned from self-management and social prescribing work, and prevention and early detection will be key…Read more

Hello, pleasure to meet you all. I signed up to this because as a pharmacist I am horrified by the cocktails of drugs (often ineffective and unsafe) that I see people prescribed for these conditions. I am also a self-care lead for my organisation and believe that we can support people with much more effective non-pharmaceutical options. Most…Read more

I’m so sorry to hear about your recent loss @sonal – I’m sure you will have gained lots of valuable, albeit I’m sure painful experiences, and there is much we and others working in this area can learn from your experiences. I look forward to working with you. Tracy

Hi all,
Yesterday we published the first outputs from our work together exploring how care can be improved for people living with both mental health and persistent back and neck pain. There are two essays that capture learning and insights from our work so far:
– The first essay outlines how the Q Lab and Mind came to focus on mental health and…Read more

All the test sites seem to have great ideas. I hope the nationally-available long-term self-management mind-body ‘Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs’ programme might form part of the picture, i.e. referrers and patients can benefit from an evidence-based combined mind-body approach to improving physical and mental health. Good morning, glad to be in this group – my interest is over several levels. I am a peer support worker on an acute ward, I also suffer from chronic pain myself and understand the difficulties of managing pain relief with a mental health diagnosis (EUPD). So i’m here to learn and to share my lived experience where appropriate.

Welcome to the group Claire, thank you for the introdution and looking forward to your contribution in the new year, we’re starting to collect some early insights from our work which you can read here: https://q.health.org.uk/blog-post/mental-health-and-persistent-pain-from-early-insights-to-emerging-themes/

I took part in the online group discussion yesterday and have been thinking about it overnight. I made a point about pain still being pain and deserving empathy and treatment even if it’s “all in your head” and I wanted to elaborate on that point a little. I think it’s really important that the Q Lab does more work around this, especially around…Read more

Hi Helen, I get this and well done on a very brave and thought provoking piece. The current system and set up for people with persistent pain is not joined up and is not a wraparound service based on the needs of the person in pain. Yes, there may be pockets of good stuff going on but I have not had any of this. It’s far too easy and a cop out f…Read more

Helen and Adrian – thank you so much for sharing your different perspectives on this. It feels like there is a real need for us to focus on the way people understand and empathise with pain, and why/ how this may be influencing or affecting the quality of service that someone receives compared to other conditions. I have been very moved by yours…Read more

Really looking forward to working with you Julie. @sarahkhoo will be in touch with more details about how to get involved, if she hasn’t already. It sounds like there is lots you would be able to share about how patients you work with experience these issues. Tracy
