Happy New year SIG LS colleagues!

Here is a kind ask to get your insights on what LS you think are best covered in 30 minute training session for QI Coaches, which include describing the tool and practicing it?

We are developing our internal Coaching QI Training Programme at King’s and trying to select a LS to be taught in a 30 mins slot.

Thanks for your kind feedback (agnese.lazzari@nhs.net)

    • Hi Agnese – Teaching a LS in 30 minutes… now there’s a challenge! Sounds like a really interestig Coaching programme you are developing though. I personally really enjoyed the ‘myth turning approach’ to challenge beliefs and open up new perspectives, which we had a Q user group session on last year. Might be possible to do a condensed 30minute session on myth turning as an LS approach? The session slides are still available here: https://q.health.org.uk/event/q-liberating-structures-user-group-17/ and fellow Q & LS group members Lyse Edwards and Ian Merrick led the session and might have some tips if you think this is interesting.

      • Thanks a million Jana! This brings me back to the key principles of LS, really useful – will share with our team and trigger considerations for inclusion in the training

    • Hi Agnese

One I have used on many occasions which could be condensed to 30min is Triz https://www.liberatingstructures.com/6-making-space-with-triz/

Only proviso would put on this one is it matters its a psychologically safe space, where people feel safe to share ideas with each other, or a neutral enough topic that no one feels uncomfortable

If this was of interest, happy for you to get in touch my direct email is hilda@cope-scotland.org

      Kind regards
      Hilda

    • Hi Agnese

I have used spiral journalling with coachees and as part of coaching supervision which you may find helpful in reflecting on own practice or to delve deeper for coachees

      Kind Regards

      Debbie

    • Hi @agneselazzari

My suggestion would be to tell people learning by doing is best for Liberating Structures and jump straight in with two of the most commonly used, and shortest, Liberating Structures:

      – Impromptu Networking (2 rounds, 6 mins)
      – 1-2-4-All (12 mins)

For the first, perhaps suggest a question like ‘What do you know about LS, what questions do you have?)
For the 1-2-3-All perhaps ‘What’s your biggest QI Coach challenge so far?’ or ‘Have you had any QI coach epiphanies so far?’.

You could then use Spiral Journal (8 mins) to help people reflect on things like LS they’ve just used, challenges, think about next steps in coaching etc. You have 4 questions to give people to answer: https://onehe.org/eu-activity/spiral-journal/

There may be time for a bit of discussion on the next steps, from people who are happy to share their ones.

I think doing 3 different short LS would be a great way for people to see the diversity.

Obviously longer ones are fab – TRIZ, Troika etc – but showing people how to string together 3 different ones perhaps shows the scope more?

If you want to have a trial run with your session – in Feb, March? – we’re planning the LS user group session for the next 6 months on Thursday. Come along and add your name.

You get to test some LS in a safe space, before you try them with the actual QI coaches themselves.

You could also ask in the Coaching Improvement SIG whether Sid or others have had successes using particular Liberating Structures.

    • Hi Agnese,
one for coaching which is really wonderful is Wise Crowds – it will support groups to consider the knowledge in the room and to sustain that problem solving methodology after the coach has left so it’s really powerful.
I also love Triz – if sharing it I’ve found it’s also essential to pair it with a sensemaking piece like 15% solutions immediately afterwards or people can feel a little overwhelmed.
      Best of luck with it.
      Juanita.

    • Thanks to you all who fantastically gave prompt feedback on this platform and via email.
I have shared it with my colleagueas – we will also try to test the suggested LSs in our coaching clinics internally and learn more from there. Thank YOU all. Feeling really supported and sharing appreciation.
