Hello! My name’s Sam and I recently started working in Surrey Heartlands ICB. We are offering a QI coaching session, where people come and talk to us about their projects. I don’t have a formal coaching qualification. I was wondering if anyone can signpost good resources for coaching for QI?

Apologies if this is not the right forum to ask!

    • Hi Sam! I’m not aware of any training courses specifically for coaching, we set up our own internally, but I’ll have a look around for you. We use the GROW model for coaching, and if you do some reading around there are some great lists of example questions you can use as prompts for your coachee. NHS improvement have a quick guide to the model (https://kss.hee.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/15/2022/08/Coaching-for-success-TGROW.pdf) if that helps? Most importantly just be sure to respect the expert is in front of you and its your role to be curious and ask questions, using the model to guide you, making sure their project is addressing a problem, rather than just a shiny new thing they want to implement! I’m more than happy to catch up if there’s any more I can do to help

    • Hi Sam. In Scotland we have the Scottish Coaching and Leading for Improvement Programme (SCLIP), which doesn’t require or teach a formal coaching qualification, but gives people the skills to have effective coaching conversations. As part of this, the Fundamental Coaching Skills from Julie Starr’s book ‘The Coaching Manual’ has helped participants think about the skills needed to support coaching conversations for QI. Might be worth a read 🙂

    • Hi Sam. We are about to launch a QI coaching programme which has been co-designed by Q members (around 30 of us). It will be free to access for all Q members.

I’ll host a webinar on this SIG very soon to showcase this as it’s a brilliant programme 🙂

It brings together concepts on coaching, improvement, measurement, psychology of change, facilitation, human factors and much more. We’ve been lucky to be able to tap into national expertise on these subject areas in the design of the content of the programme.

I’m also presenting this at a conference this week so if I can get the recording of the presentation I will share it here.
