What is the challenge your project is going to address and how does it connect to the theme of 'How can we improve across system boundaries?

The key challenge relates to multiple different approaches to QI across multiple providers.  Cheshire East already has reasonably mature core groups within each of the 8 Care Communities, whereby innovative ideas are brought to the table (generally emanating from local knowledge of the local population), however the approach to taking ideas & improvements forward tends to be inconsistent hence the need to develop a tried and tested approach to QI.  CC. 80 individuals (8 x 10) undertaking a QI development programme together in their Core Groups, developing an “idea” and making it happen as part of the programme – resulting in 8 innovative, forward thinking QI initiatives at the end of the 12 month period.

What does your project aim to achieve?

Overall aim:-  Develop a consistent, evidenced based approach to QI using tried and tested programmes across all of our 8 Cheshire East Care Communities.

Objectives:-

  • Build QI capability & capacity consistently across multiple providers (Health, Care & VCFSE)
  • Create a safe space for innovation and local initiatives, using tried and tested QI methodology
  • Learn together, share existing knowledge, develop QI skills and in so doing strengthen relationships.
  • Share newly formed QI skills back into own organisations, capitalise on new found skills.

How will the project be delivered?

Bespoke QI capacity & capability building programme, offering each of the 8 Care Community Core Groups 4 x full day sessions over several months.  The programme will be face to face, interactive and will immerse colleagues into the world of QI, myth busting and de-mystifying improvement language.

Each of the 8 Core Groups will be supported in deciding on a local project/initiative to take forward throughout the programme, therefore working through Define, Design, Decide and Deliver with the overall output, a successful QI initiative.   Successful projects will be part of the impact measurement, alongside ongoing programme evaluations.

Value for money relates to effective use of Core Group Colleague’s time, in effect all members having equal voice and ownership of a defined project compared to current ad hoc (often duplicated) approaches to operating a QI initiative

How is your project going to share learning?

Cheshire East Health, Care and VCFSE operates within the wider Cheshire & Mersey ICS, therefore significant opportunities to share for example, the C & M Improvement Network.  5 of the 8 Care Communities are already national demonstrator sites, therefore an opportunity to share with Complete Care Community Colleagues.  Annual Care Community celebration events with guest appearances, for example this years event guest Prof C Fuller.

How you can contribute

  • To be further explored, however:-
  • One example - share learning where others have successfully managed to build QI capability & capacity across multiple providers. Would be seeking "ideas" and "pitfalls to look out for" from those who have experienced working across several different systems.
  • Support by way of a "would be better if....." group of colleagues from Q Exchange as a sounding board

Love this proposal as it will build system capability ( not just organisational capability). This will improve population health, build relationships and also ensure people who access services co-design services.

This is a positive initiative with some innovative attributes. The potential of joint working and development of a consolidated approach to QI across health and social care services should be supported and rolled-out more widely.
