Following a nursing career as a clinician, service manager and clinical mentor in a range of specialities and settings, Gillian worked as a leadership and quality improvement academic at Teesside University from 2001-2018 before taking up her current role as a Senior Research Fellow at the NIHR Patient Safety Translational Research Centre at Bradford Institute for Health Research working in the Workforce Engagement and Wellbeing for Patient Safety theme. Her PhD focused on silences research exploring the recovery experiences of young people with fragility hip fracture.

She was a member of the National Reference Group for Service Improvement and has extensive experience of programme development including for example the MA Advancing Quality Safety & Governance in Health and Social Care and CIEHF recognised PgCert Advancing Human Factors in Health and Social Care programmes. She is a licensed Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) Step II practitioner and has been an accredited NHS Leadership Model feedback facilitator since 2004.

Gillian is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, former fellow of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL4HealthNE) and a member of the Q Founding Cohort. She has consultancy experience and worked strategically as a member of the HEE NENC Human Factors Steering Group and the AHSN(NENC)/PSC/Q Executive Steering Group.
