New book by the Wenger-Trayners: ‘Communities of practice within and across organizations: a guidebook’

The pioneer of Communities of Practice Etienne Wenger-Trayner has a new book out – it’s available as a paperback, a free download etc here: https://www.wenger-trayner.com/cop-guidebook/

    Some blurb about it:

“What does it take to launch and sustain a communities of practice initiative? This book helps guide individuals, teams, and organizations through the process. It is for organizational leaders creating a conducive environment, community leaders launching and sustaining their communities, people in various roles facilitating meetings, activities, and the use of technology, and evaluators accounting for the value communities create. It reflects the combined experiences of the authors in cultivating communities of practice within and across organizations.”

    Contents:

    1. Why communities of practice

    2. Setting the organizational context

    3. The art of cultivating communities

    4. Designing for social learning

    5. Using technology

    6. Assessing the value created

I’ve not looked into the content yet (I’m en route to Glasgow for NHS Scotland, and can’t get access to the download) – but it could be a good book to have a book club chat around, if people are interested. (That said there’s already a plan for a Systems Convening book chat, in September. Another Wenger-Trayner book!).

    • Hi Matthew, thank you for sharing. I would be interested in a book club chat, and a deadline would help incentivise me to read it!

      • Hi Hesham,

So sorry to be so slow to respond. Long enough to actually get hold of a hard-copy of this new CoPs guidebook though, rather than just the free PDF…! 🙂

From my first look at it seems really good, likely to be really useful to anyone trying to launch or support a community of practice… Loads of practical stuff.

If you still fancy a book chat, shall we try to find a time in September, or later, that works – and see who wants to join us to discuss it?
