Hi everyone,
We at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare partnered with 7 organisations across England and Wales last year, working with 35 different healthcare teams to plan, run and measure the impact of SusQI projects. Collectively, the competitions are anticipated to save 7,196,265 kgCO2e per year, equivalent to driving over 20 million miles in an average car!! There were also impressive anticipated financial savings of over £780,000.
Team projects have targeted goals across the principles of sustainable healthcare from prevention to low carbon alternatives, with winning teams targeting areas such as
- Streamlining home enteral feeding equipment
- Prevention of oral mucositis for patients undergoing radiotherapy for base of tongue and tonsil cancer.
- Redefining the stable HIV patient pathway and reducing low value activity (appointments)
- Inhaler decarbonisation clinics
- A local supply chain initiative
- Reducing energy, water and transport waste in a haemodialysis unit
- Paper reduction and engaging staff in sustainable actions
Some teams have gone on to win additional awards in recognition for their impressive work. The Northamptonshire Infection Prevention and Control team were awarded the Sustainability Partnerships 2022 Award for staff engagement.
You can read the competition impact reports and on the Green Ward Competition webpage, or alternatively individual SusQI projects are shared via our sustainable healthcare networks. Our next round of Green Team Competitions are due to start in May, and can’t wait to see the new ideas the teams generate!
Please do get in touch if you have any questions!
Best wishes,
Rachel

Very well done Green Wart teams.
Hi Rachel, these are such great examples of SusQI in action. This is a particular interest of mine and I worked with Frances on a blog last year that covered some of what The Centre was doing in this area. We’d love to publish another blog for Q members that delves into three of these projects to lift out learning for the health improvement community. Would you be interested in working on this with me?
Hi Jessica
I apologise I missed this comment two months ago (we have been running three competitions in this time so its very busy!)
This sounds great and I’d love to work with you if you are still interested and have the time, please email me at rachel.mclean@sustainablehealthcare.org.uk
Best wishes
Rachel
