I’ve just been on the local TV news – the reporter wanted some comment on eco-anxiety. This is a recognised phenomenon – may be caused by extreme weather events. Possibly headlines with catastrophic phrasing of climate crisis may exacerbate this. I suggested that local greenspace activity could be a way to alleviate climate anxiety. We have a PhD looking at greenspace activities for mental health and how to commission these in communities. https://www.institutemh.org.uk/research/centre-for-social-futures/about-us-centre-for-social-futures/1137-sofu-research-featured-on-bbc-east-midlands-today
For some of the evidence – have a look at references I’ve put here: https://www.researchgate.net/project/Greenspace-and-mental-health
Thank you for this useful post, Neil, and for the list of references. This looks like a valuable resource. Is the PhD linked with the NHS England Green Social Prescribing programme? https://sustainablehealthcare.org.uk/what-we-do/connecting-q-locally/green-social-prescribing-sustainable-healthcare
Thank you Neil
This is an area of interest to ourselves as we recognise the existential anxiety which many are experiencing as a result of the pandemic, on top of which are the daily reminders of climate change and its impact. Already we are seeing some young people perhaps facing additional challenges due to inequality wondering is there a point as what future is there………… This piece was written with tips for adjusting to the new normal https://www.cope-scotland.org/wellbeing-tips/entry/covid-19 and acknowledging for people feeling anxious at this time is natural. Other work which offers people strategies to cope with the anxiety arising from the climate emergency I think will be crucial going forwards as people need to recognise risk and find ways to manage it, but not at the cost of living in a state of permanent anxiety, which only drains the energy needed to address the challenges we face
Great to hear of work being done in this area
Thank you
Hilda
