I am a GP with an interest in the interaction between physical and mental health. I think the distinction is not always a helpful way of understanding humans, and this is especially true with chronic pain. Our health beliefs play an important role in our overall wellbeing, both mental and physical, and as health care professionals there is a danger that we can inadvertently become part of the problem. Could exploring health beliefs, addressing the Cartesian divide, on an individual and societal level, be part of the solution?
Hi William,
I agree that the examination of professionals’ health beliefs would be a potentially very fruitful avenue to explore.
Somewhat related to this is the lack of confidence physical health care workers may have in treating co-morbid mental health conditions, and vice versa for mental health workers. For instance research has indicated that it is lack of confidence and relevant knowledge of the benefits of physical activity on mental health that can act as a barrier to staff encouraging mental health care patients to engage more in exercise.
Best,
Sarah
Indeed. I have experienced this first hand whilst working in in-patient psychiatry whilst cross covering the main hospital. “Expert generalists” may be able to help in taking an holistic view. Barriers to alternative or holistic therapies such as exercise are interesting. Of course, there is a dynamic between the HCP and the patients health beliefs, and each can influence the other. For instance, evidence for the effectiveness of very brief interventions for behavioural change in primary care is mixed.
