There is evidence to suggest that a proportion of the time taken at an outpatient appointment is not of a clinical nature but more administrative, asking questions relating to locations, appointment etc. The information provided prior to an outpatient appointment can be disjointed and conflicting based upon the individual giving the information and the patient receiving the information.

Anecdotal information from Alderhey, who are developing a similar system is to improve the clinical content at outpatients appointments and create an efficiency, estimated a 1 minute per outpatient attendance.

Therefore a system which will allow patients to ask questions and obtain personalised responses, will reduce patient anxiety, increase the quality of the clinical contact and may assist in reducing DNA rates.

Your proposal

Construct and deploy a cognitive computing patient information portal allowing patients to ask questions in relation to their care and deliver context, patient centric answers.

This will be achieved by:

  • Creation of a IBM Watson assistant patient healthcare assistance portal

  • Train healthcare practitioners, in the first instance Allied health professional on a

  • Co design a system between healthcare professionals and patients

  • Deploy a training solution allowing the collection of patient specific questions

  • Deploy the solution via the Trust website and via a mobile application

  • Continue training the system to develop clinical content and greater patient centric responses

What is the benefit you are hoping to achieve?

  • Improve the quality of information available to patients in relation to UHMBT services

  • Reduce the non-clinical time during an outpatient appointment

  • Reduce patient anxiety prior to appointments

  • Reduce DNA rates at outpatient appointments

What benefits do you expect for the Q community?
• Proof of concept of application of high power computing solutions to deliver patient centred care
• Proof of concept of application of patient centred digital solution to reduce patient anxiety
• Creation of the business case for utilisation of patient centred digital solutions within an outpatient setting
• Proof that digital solutions improve patient attendance at outpatient appointments

  1. This seemed like a simple peer-to-peer digital solution to address a serious problem.

Regarding proof of concept of application of high power computing solutions to deliver patient centred care, have you considered talking to your local mental health digital team. Working in mental health myself, I would highlight that we are usually at the forefront of using electronic systems instead of paper notes.

I also like the idea that once working effectively it could be easy to transpose to other trusts. Feel free to send it down to Sussex once up and running!

  3. Have you managed to gain insight into Alder Hey Hospital's development?  I'm sure there will be many lessons to learn if they have already begun this journey.

have looked at this and it is the beginning of a new way for communication with patients. There will indeed be lessons to learn from their deployment
