This pyramid of characteristics was created using a co design and development process with people who had experience of receiving care and living with long term conditions, specifically where they had mental and physical health challenges and the impact not having their mental health needs made on care.  It can be used in discussion around improving people’s experience of care, challenges staff may have to implementing this and ways this can be overcome. It is also important to reflect on the wellbeing of the workforce and the impact that has on a person centred response.

  1. an admirable summary diagram, with an aspect of priority; would you expect a person involved in care to offer technical information and if so, is the level of explanation to be judged as part of the communication skill? (some patients may desire more explanation than others). Although I’m thinking of radiation therapy which is not often a solution in chronic healthcare scenarios, it can play a part there, as it mostly does in acute scenario.

  2. Thank you for sharing this, Hilda. I initially had a similar thought to Rollo about where technical skills fit into this picture. And that set me wondering about all of the things that support the pyramid — maybe the pyramid sits on top of an iceberg ! — including resources, education and training, fair working conditions, good leadership and management, adequate workforce, and so on.

As you say, it’s really important to think about how staff can implement this in practice. How can we move beyond nice words and ideas like integrity and compassion and get to grips with what a healthcare system needs to look like if it is to reliably produce these values?
