Agree with Jem and have similar observation, and the use of language such as “engineering” can be off putting to some and there are lots of human factors and design thinking involved in good process design and a collaborative approach is essential

I liked it. I did pick up the key concept about design of work that I felt could have been more clearly framed, but I think the session will help people move forward in their understanding. We heard that ‘healthcare systems have become increasingly exploited and industrialised and that the system pursues standardization’. The term ‘industrialised’ may not refer directly to quality management but I’m sure it’s a picture that will be formed in peoples’ minds. The passage refers to healthcare systems and not just medicine. Funnily enough the original passage goes on to talk about the Healthcare Industry, a bit of a contradiction I thought.

Anyone that thinks that the privatisation of out NHS is a good idea should read this book. Also the ‘standardisation’ of NHS ‘PROCESSES’ is an absolutely necessary step despite most ‘leaders’ and others avoiding the issue. Once again they think that a ‘work around’ will suffice. They are wrong!

Which organisation actually does the certification – eg of that Mexican hospital? Or do orgs self-certify somehow?

Organisations can’t claim certification to the standard in the UK unless they have been audited by an authorised organisation like LRQA. I’m not sure that any of the UKs external auditing companies have been authorised to assess for BS ISO 7101:2023 yet. They will have to do a bit of work in preparation for that. Hi Tom, I think it would be helpful to explain the difference between certification bodies (lrqa, sgs, bsi etc) and accreditation body (ukas) to help audience understand the ‘control structure’ or relationship between these organisations involving in ISO activities? Also Isqua?

The NHS trust in question presumably hasn’t sought actual certification – I think only one hospital so far has successfully done that (Hospital Puebla, Mexico).

Yes, certification only if it’s mandated. Much to expensive. The CQC could design their own version of an external audit but I’ll not hold my breath. Any off the shelf guide, like some of the noddy software solutions, will be a waste of money and time.

About this group
There is now a growing interest in Quality Management in healthcare. This Special Interest Group will help those interested in learning about or implementing a Quality Management System (QMS).
In Quality Management there is a great deal of emphasis on:
- Documenting how work gets done (the steps that comprise the process).
- Examining the flow of work between people or workstations.
- Giving people the knowledge and methods they need to constantly improve that work.
There are a lot of different process improvement methods but almost all of them serve one of two purposes:
- To eliminate variation in quality and speed (a major source of error).
- To improve process flow and speed.
The majority of process improvement work should fall into one of those two categories.
This SIG is convened by Tom Rose.
