Was anyone on the NHS Impact QMS call today at 10am? What did you think? My thoughts later!

We heard that ‘healthcare systems have become increasingly exploited and industrialised and that the system pursues standardization’. This is not about our NHS, it’s about American healthcare and is from America. Please don’t be mislead! This is not the case in the NHS. QMS may have been first used in industry but it is equally valid in…Read more

Hi Tom, I think in the Q Event session on Community Appointment Days, when criticism of ‘industrialised’ medicine was mentioned, it wasn’t aimed at Quality Management as you seem to be thinking it might.
It was about their novel approach that is strengths-based, includes a ‘what matters to you’ conversation, includes community supports, not just…Read more

The term ‘industrialised’ may not refer directly to quality management but I’m sure it’s a picture that will be formed in peoples’ minds. The passage refers to healthcare systems and not just medicine. Funnily enough the original passage goes on to talk about the Healthcare Industry, a bit of a contradiction I thought.

The quote is from the book ‘Why We Revolt’ by Victor Montori. I was so concerned about the quote, as it was included in an NHS sponsored webinar, I purchased the book. It’s nothing to do with our NHS, it’s about the very poor state of the American ‘Healthcare Industry’. The American healthcare industry is nothing like our NHS (at the moment!) and…Read more

Anyone that thinks that the privatisation of out NHS is a good idea should read this book. Also the ‘standardisation’ of NHS ‘PROCESSES’ is an absolutely necessary step despite most ‘leaders’ and others avoiding the issue. Once again they think that a ‘work around’ will suffice. They are wrong!

Which organisation actually does the certification – eg of that Mexican hospital? Or do orgs self-certify somehow?
-
Organisations can’t claim certification to the standard in the UK unless they have been audited by an authorised organisation like LRQA. I’m not sure that any of the UKs external auditing companies have been authorised to assess for BS ISO 7101:2023 yet. They will have to do a bit of work in preparation for that. Organisations can conduct their…Read more

Hi Tom, I think it would be helpful to explain the difference between certification bodies (lrqa, sgs, bsi etc) and accreditation body (ukas) to help audience understand the ‘control structure’ or relationship between these organisations involving in ISO activities? Also Isqua?
-
Thanks Isabel. I’ll do a post explaining the structure.

Hi Tom, in your Oct 30th webinar on ‘implementing a quality management system based on ISO 7101: 2023 in an NHS trust’, will you be sharing which NHS trust it was?
-
No but you are welcome to join the webinar. I’ll be talking about healthcare generally and not about particular Trusts.
-
Certainly sounds interesting, and I plan to come along. Will even read ISO 7101: 2023 by then!
The NHS trust in question presumably hasn’t sought actual certification – I think only one hospital so far has successfully done that (Hospital Puebla, Mexico).
If you ever come across any info about the difference it’s made at that hospital, I’d love…Read more

Yes, certification only if it’s mandated. Much to expensive. The CQC could design their own version of an external audit but I’ll not hold my breath. Any off the shelf guide, like some of the noddy software solutions, will be a waste of money and time.

I liked it. I did pick up the key concept about design of work that I felt could have been more clearly framed, but I think the session will help people move forward in their understanding. It definitely felt like one of the better attempts to summarise QMS in NHS terms. I’m interested to hear your thoughts… I’m guessing that you might have…Read more
