Carl Davies is a strong advocate of complexity and system theory approaches to delivering large scale quality improvement and has been the Director of MSK/Ortho for Berkshire West ICP since December 2019 and the Director of Systems Improvement - MSK/Ortho at BOB more recently.
A Physiotherapist (and project manager) by background, Carl moved into change management several years ago due to his strong interest in health economics, systems thinking and complexity theory.
After moving through the ranks in Physiotherapy, Carl worked as a Transformation/Programme Manager at Gloucestershire CCG for 3 years and the MSK Programme he led received ‘highly commended’ at the HSJ Value awards 2017.
He has also recently written a publication for Health Education England ‘Transforming the MSK landscape with Physiotherapists as a first point of contact’.
The Surrey iMSK service programme was shortlisted for a HSJ Award 2018 and is being delivered through a programme of complexity based approaches.
Carl has feature in the Wenger-Trayner Handbook on 'Systems Convening' and is in the middle of a PhD looking at complexity based strategy and more specifically, what stops us creating the environment needed for managing complexity and how we enable a sense-making process from information/feedback sources in complex systems.
