Biography
My first career was as a Business and Management Consultant in computer industry then I retrained in my early 30s in medicine and became a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon. My special interest was in older people and hip fracture and I devoted my career to transforming services for these patients and improving outcomes significantly.
I held lead clinical roles in my specialty plus in health informatics and also in service redesign for my hospital trust. Working with GP colleagues and with commissioners we developed and delivered a number of collaborative clinical services.
Since leaving the NHS I have worked as a medical consultant delivering roles including Medical Director and working with the DH on Horizon Scanning - Skills for the future
I was a Trustee with Age UK in South Lakeland for five years and chaired their health advisory group. I was elected to represent the third sector in South Lakeland and also as chair of the Health and Wellbeing Forum for three years.
My passion is improved health for all. I set up Going for Old CIC to encourage, motivate and inspire people to take small steps to adopt healthy lifestyle choices to improve the quality of life as they age. I lecture and deliver talks and workshops on healthy ageing, building better bones, osteoporosis and other topics.
I also want to contribute to trying to change public perception of ageing and also our expectations of our own older age.
I believe you're never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream, I took up running at the age of 53 and found a passion for ultrarunning. I'm known as The Running Granny and, amongst other challenges, in September 2019 I ran from John O'Groats to Lands End setting a World Record as the oldest female to do so, aged 60.
I have three children and four gorgeous granddaughters.
You can find me on my website but also on Facbook and Instagram @therunninggranny
