    Good morning QI folk,

I’ve had a question from someone who is planning to implement a change in clinical practice who would like to make it a better project by using QI methods.

Where’s are good places to start, and what resources would you recommend?

    Thanks for your help!

    Jo

    • I’d advise them to get in touch with their service or quality improvement team and ask them for some support.

    • My first question will be if they have any QI training to start with. If so, I will start from having a baseline measurement of specific quality (safety, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, person-centredness and sustainability) that they are trying to improve. I will then move on to appreciative enquiry with the clinical team and patients, process mapping and codesigning a Driver diagram with the clinical team. Hope this helps.

    • Hi Jo,

They may be interested to take a look at our open access SusQI resources – https://www.susqi.org/
There is a step by step guide (4 steps – set goals, study the system, design improvement and measure impact) with resources for each section. Consideration across the sustainable value equation (clinical, financial, social and environmental factors) is encouraged.

Here is a recent AHP led SusQI case study if useful/of interest – the hand therapy team at Northampton General Hospital improved patient outcomes (reduced complications, reduced length of episodes of care with less appointments with therapy and medical team), saved considerable amounts of staff time, saved money and CO2e – https://networks.sustainablehealthcare.org.uk/resources/hand-therapy-pre-operative-appointment-plastic-hand-trauma-patients

      Best wishes,
      Rachel (Centre for Sustainable Healthcare)

      • This is a great website, thanks for sharing. Are you involved with Greener AHPs week in April? Looks like lots of crossover with what SusQI does.

      • Hi Jo,

Great – I’m glad it will be useful for you.

Yes my colleague Ben (Sustainable healthcare delivery lead/AHP lead) has been involved – he works closely with Jacqueline Gordon (Clinical Fellow in Sustainability, Greener NHS) – please let me know if you would like me to connect you with Ben and/or Jackie.

You may have already seen a programme for Greener AHP week however here is a link on our AHP sustainability network (in case you are interested to join the network too)
        https://networks.sustainablehealthcare.org.uk/events/greener-allied-health-professions-ahp-week-2024

There is a session on Monday from a previous Green Team Competition winner (The environmental impact of specialist physiotherapy for limb reconstruction) and a talk from our Green Space for Health Team on the Wednesday. There may be a few other teams who have worked with us throughout the week!

I hope you enjoy the week!

        Best wishes,
        Rachel

    • Hi Jo,
I will get in touch with the QI team if the hospital has one, they are very good, at least where I work there is a QI team.
Another option could be to meet with key stakeholders and find a common problem that you want to focus on and do a brainstorming with them.
Once you know what the problem is and what you want to change, it will be much easier for you. Then think about using QI tools and models like fishbone diagram and kotter (these are just 2 of the main tools that I use) and they worked for me.
I do not know if I should say this, but I have won a QI award on January thanks to the use of these tools and a lot of effort.
Start with this and then get in touch if you need some more advice.
I hope it helps! Wish you the best!

      • Yes, you should say you won an award! Well done.

But clearly we are going to be interested in what you won the award for- would you like to share in a blog post? Or just tell us a bit more about it here.

    • Hi Jo, yes I can do that or maybe I can share a link with my project, so I don’t have to type a lot :D. 😉
