    Hi

Im a psychotherapist in Occy Health in the NHS. Id really like to hear from people from other trusts regarding acute trauma care for staff following a major or traumatic incident, for example training and how such a intervention would be structured please?

    Thank you

    • Hi Stuart, I am sure that you are mostly interested in 1:1 interventions, but I think its important to complement that with organisational development using for example, Schwartz Rounds which are led by Clinical Psychologists and have a social approach to therapeutic recovery.

      • Absolutely brilliant idea!!! I’ve been on a Schwartz round panel before for something completly different and its an excellent healing and sharing platform.

        Thank you

Creating a supportive working environment with good relationships between team members and a culture of promoting wellbeing is also helpful for enabling people to feel safe to access support if affected

      Hope that is helpful
      Kind regards

      • Hi Hilda

Thank you so much for this. I think your right, as well as our own OH interventions where nessasary supportive departments is key and probably the most importat component

    • Hi Stuart

Its what I am trying to help create within the staff wellbeing SIG. Online events, offering a platform to share ideas and build a bank of resources which people can tap into. Always interested in co facilitating/offering space for guest speakers. If you thought a peer support session looking at how we create working environments which help promote wellbeing and safe spaces to mitigate the impact of the traumas which can often accompany working in health and social care, let me know and we could create a 50min session to offer space to share ideas on this.

My own experience of supporting people on my team when something has happened which has had a strong emotional impact is to make myself available to them, to listen and hear and then take it from there where the person thinks would be most helpful to go next. This is just my own view, but I think people knowing someone sees what has happened, and cares about how they are processing that, in itself helps to work through the natural feelings which can emerge in the situations people can find themselves in. In addition to this, recognising the stressors that accompany the role and creating an environment which helps maintain staffs wellbeing and resilience.

We live in strange times. People don’t only have the stressors of the job, but things which may be happening in their own life too. Making space to acknowledge we do work in a challenging environment and often not a lot can be done about that. However, how we treat each other and manage that challenging environment as a team has a huge impact on how those challenges impact on us.

Sorry on my soapbox, its just something I feel really strongly about. We are not machines, but we often work in mechanistic systems , so its making sure we support the humans in that system so everyone, including those receiving care, feel as nurtured and supported as possible.
