Welcome to all those who have recently joined our Coaching Improvement SIG. I wondered if anyone currently uses coaches in their organisations? If so – what’s worked, what has been challenging? If not, what are the barriers?

    • Hi Sid. Yes there is coaching available through the HSE in Ireland. The Nursing development unit also trains nurses to become coaches. I have no idea of the number that avail of coaching. I would be particularly interested to know how many Frontline staff engage with coaching. As a manager when I suggest coaching they look blankly at me. Barriers may be that they precieve it as a negative thing, that they need help. Maybe confusing it with counselling. Again it can depend on the skills and experience of the coach ass to whether it is a positive experience etc.

      • I do coach people in QI. And my firm opinion is that every organisation must have a coach in the initial journey of QI. Enablers I found are overall culture, leadership involvement, good documentation of data especially EHR. Barriers were blame culture, salary structure, disinterested leadership, poor data records apart from coaching skills of the mentor.

      • Thanks Mary. Are these coaches for people’s development or coaches specifically aligned to quality improvement?

    • We have a coaching offer that is run through our HR team. We have a small team of qualified coaches across the organisation who can be drawn upon when either coaching has been recommended or when someone requests it. HEE have recently funded L5 coaching for a cohort of AHPs and nursing staff too so our pool will become larger. We deliver a taster in our leadership development programme too so people start to get a flavour of coaching conversations in their everyday working practice. This has evaluated really well. Happy to link you up with someone who can give you more detailed info it it would help!

      • Thanks Jennie. We have a similar set up where I work – albeit this is for coaching development.

We are exploring coaches specifically for quality improvement work, to help teams at a local/meso level with improvement efforts. Do you have this at Alder Hey?

    • Ah yes – this is our team! Happy to chat through what we do…
