    Hi All

I’m searching (badly) for any published research on QI as an internal marketing tool. Specifically, internal marketing is often considered the domain off organisational development. I have found papers where internal marketing is considered a mediator/ moderator of leadership approaches ie transformational leadership in order to create social capitol and employee engagament, and also acts as a mediator in a learning organisation to create similar outcomes.

I feel like implementing a widespread QI intervention in an organisation is essentially internal marketing but potentially disguised, or managed in a different way. I’m not sure it has been studied – but couldn’t think of a better place to ask if anyone had any published evidence.

A bit niche I know – thanks for any help you can give me 🙂

    • Excellent question! I would frame internal marketing as a dissemination strategy to support implementation / improvement. Dissemination is a component of Greenhalgh et al’s classic review (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.0887-378X.2004.00325.x), whilst networks and communications is a component of CFIR (https://implementationscience.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1748-5908-4-50). I wonder if these might provide valuable avenues for your literature review?

      • absolutely brilliant. I haven’t read well enough to know if it answers my challenges, but both of them add to the search terms I am struggling with and will most certainly be of use. I cannot thank you enough !

Its easy to find marketing literature but I want to match it with QI evidence as much as I can to try and bridge the gap between perspectives/ demonstrate its all comes back to the Lens of Profound knowledge in the end.

    • Hi Sara. Wow. Sounds really interesting!

Can I suggest that you contact your NHS Library & Knowledge Services Team who will be able to research this thoroughly for you.

I’m not sure which site you are based at but their contact details are available here: https://www.pat.nhs.uk/education-and-research/library-contacts.htm

    • update to say thanks.
Unfortunately library services couldn’t really find anything for me.
I created quite an interesting assignment (I think) around whether the action of carrying out wholescale quality improvement interventions are in themselves an internal marketing action – comparing QI methodology to Ballantynes Relationship Mediated model of Internal Marketing. I got far too carried away and let myself down on word count!

I used some work about QI capabilities assessed using the dynamic capabilities from Joy Furnival et al. but found very little about QI as marketing rather than marketing to promote QI. I think there’s probably some research here but probably beyond me!
