I know you mentioned the ISO Standard (BS ISO 7101:2023) Healthcare organisation management – Management systems for quality in healthcare organisations – Requirements in the last few days on here Thomas. I’d be interested to develop an understanding of any healthcare organisations that are implementing the ISO standard please or are thinking about this with a view to beginning. Do you know of any? Or does anyone else?

    • I am working with one large Trust to help design and implement a QMS to this ISO Standard. I’m sure that some others may be but I don’t know which. I do no that several other Trusts are interested in the standard as you can see from comments in this SIG. This week I’ll be posting questions and answers from my last webinar. A number of questions were associated with the standard. Have a read of my post below on integrated management systems. Trusts will already be operating a similar management system to ISO 7101 although they don’t realise it. NHS Scotland do have their own views on management systems. My advice would be to go with the ISO management system framework specified in ISO’s Annex SL.

    • I am very curious of the adoption of ISO 9001 standards within hospital settings currently, particularly at the ORGANISATION level rather than limited to individual departments or service lines. Having a clear picture helps us examining existing implementations in other UK hospitals, also help identify potential gaps and inform our own approach, enabling us to avoid “reinventing the wheel” when it comes to QMS.

Tom, would you be able to provide any insight into hospitals in the UK that have achieved ISO 9001 certification at this comprehensive level?

Any examples or resources you could share would be highly valuable, as they would offer practical context for anyone interested in hospital wide management system such as 7101.

      • I think that ISO 7101 is the standard that the NHS should use at the organisation level and for main Trust delivery of care. Other areas that have specific requirements like Labs, Pharmacy and Radiology should use a management system based on Annex SL, as is ISO 7101 (and ISO 9001). An Integrated Management System could then be used to manage ‘performance’ (note- ‘Compliance to performance’) against ALL relevant standards. There are many other standards in use in healthcare that will also fit in with an Annex SL framework for managing ‘performance’. In the Trust that I’m working with we are starting at the top and bottom of the organisation with the design and implementation of a IMS.

      • It’s important that Trusts see the full picture rather than just look at individual Departments and Services. The full picture is looking at ‘performance’ right across the organisation.
