Hi everyone,
I am a pain management consultant based up in sunny Stockport. I am also the clinical lead for our bijou pain service. We’ve undertaken a revamp of our triage and 1st POC system over the last year.
We are a small team in a trust with a small and overworked BI team so our bandwith for data capture and analysis is small. I’ve joined this group as I would like advice on the best way to measure phase 2 of our development and proof potential benefits.
Phase 2 or ‘Your Patient Journey’ is an EBCD driven project designed to give people with persistent pain rapid access to pain management support that is then shared across hospital and community. Full details for the project are here:
I would hugely value this groups opinion and advice regarding:
– Reliable and repeatable Persistent Pain outcomes measures that you have you used successfully in the past
– How to measure and demonstrate outcomes in the challenging environment of a small, somewhat isolated, team?
– How to embed outcome measurement and reporting into day to day practice moving forward?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi David,
I thought I’d share an upcoming Q Zoom, that could be relevant to your challenge.
We have something coming up about the Vanguard method – which used demand analysis to identify ‘failure demand’ waste points in a system, then try to re-orient the systems towards responding to the value demand and reducing the failure demand (it often turns out to be running at 60, 70, 80% of activity).
The particular case study is around frailty in a GP consortium, but the principles transfer widely.
Here’s a link with more info and a link to register: https://q.health.org.uk/event/from-understanding-demand-to-enabling-system-transformation-in-a-gp-consortium/
A Q Zoom a year ago also shared the nitty-gritty of a Vanguard-style intervention (though not done by Vanguard): https://youtu.be/Zc8WRMwg-Fs
Hi Matthew,
Thank you for these links. I hadn’t heard of the Vanguard system and look forward to seeing how we can apply it to our project.
I think Vanguard is just a system-orientated approach inspired by the QI pioneer Deming, but applied to public services rather than the industry side that lots of QI originated in.
Something like that anyway. We can find out the details when when we hear from the team In Lincolnshire, I guess….
Hey David, you could also search for ‘pain’ as a keyword in the member directory. As I’ve done here: https://q.health.org.uk/community/directory/?biro-orderby=last_activity&biro-aoi=&biro-location=&biro-s=pain
You might be able to spot a few fellow members who’d be able to help you with your questions and then reach out to them?
Best of luck with it all!
Maria, Q Community Convener
Great idea. Thanks Maria
