‘Could Buurtzorg work in Britain?’ – join our Zoom on 11 May

Brendan Martin (Buurtzorg Britain & Ireland) will be coming to talk with Q’s Reimagining Health & Care SIG again in May. Don’t miss it!

    More info/to register: https://q.health.org.uk/event/could-buurtzorg-work-in-britain/

He’ll be sharing the results of a new five year pan-European study (‘Transforming Integrated Care in the Community’) into the opportunities and challenges for the pioneering self-managed Buurtzorg approach to care at home. (We hope to be joined by a UK Buurtzorg team too).

Can this approach spread around the NHS, can it overcome the many cultural and structural barriers that stand in the way of the novel approaches we need in health and care?

Buurtzorg was created (in the Netherlands) when the new performance management regime of the 1990s – rather than leading to the desired nirvana of efficiency and low costs – led to a doubling in costs in 10 years, a drop in service quality and demotivated nurses leaving the profession in droves.

Buurtzorg, by contrast, has the highest patient satisfaction of any healthcare organisation and has been Dutch Employer of the Year 5 times. Its person-centred, strengths-based approach leads to big financial savings too.

But the report finds almost 250 barriers to Buurtzorg’s inspiring autonomous teams-based approach in the NHS and elsewhere!

Can they be overcome? Join us to find out…
