The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare have developed a guide and accompanying calculator to make it easy for health professionals, quality improvement leads, sustainability and practice managers at hospitals and GP practices to measure the environmental impact of switching to remote consultations.
Funded through Q by the Health Foundation and NHS England and NHS Improvement, the guide describes step-by-step three different methods for calculating the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission savings of avoided patient travel and can be used for a specific clinical pathway, clinical department, or a whole organisation.
You can access the guide and calculator: https://networks.sustainablehealthcare.org.uk/networks/commissioning-sustainable-healthcare/remote-consultations-do-they-reduce-greenhouse-gas
Thank you for letting us know about this, Rosie. It’s a sound and very helpful piece of work. Congratulations to Inge Steinbach, Carbon Modelling Lead at CSH and to you, Rosie for your work on this. Thank you too to members of this group, including Jo Morris, who helped with piloting the guide and calculator. For those taking a look and trying it out, please do post your feedback here!
