This is an interesting analysis summarising the impact of deprivation, age and ethnicity on overall experience of and access to general practice (based on results from the GP patient survey).

It got me thinking about what we could do from a QI/ change management perspective, in terms of improving access to primary care for these groups who often face additional barriers in terms of getting the care they need. Has anyone worked on this already? Or have you got an idea of what might be an effective intervention? Please post below if you do – I’m sure we could generate some interesting suggestions as a group.

    • The inverse care law still very much alive and kicking

Services are just the tip of the iceberg

It’s the whole of society that drives it

Even if funding formulas were fairer the NHS can’t mitigate the uneven burden of disease by itself

Social Care and NHS need to be combined with prevention as the top priority so we can level the playing field

    • Hi Rammya
We are just about the star a piece of work on this in our PCN related to early diagnosis of cancer and screening uptake. We have employed a ‘Cancer care nurse’ who has a remit to support early diagnosis. She is started with ‘understanding the problem’ and will be making contact with people who haven’t taken up their screening offer to understand better what the barriers might be and what would facilitate their being able to access care. I think it should be a really interesting starting point to look at health inequalities and whether our systems are design around people already advantaged.
