Samantha Conran (she/her)
Associate Director, Croydon Quality Improvement
Croydon Health Services NHS Trust
England - London (South)
Biography
I started my career within the NHS in 2009 as a registered Nurse, found a penchant for operating theatres and in particular as an anaesthetic nurse. I started life at Kings College Hospital and refined my craft at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre. Fancying a change in career direction I became a specialist nurse in transfusion practice at Croydon University Hospital. This was a pivotal moment for me in my career, I found a passion for QI, completed an MSc, chaired the London Regional Transfusion Practitioner Network, founded and chaired the National Transfusion Practitioner Network and had a seat at the National Blood Transfusion Committee representing TP's and our committment & contributions to Transfusion 2024 - five-year plan supporting patient care across the NHS.
Croydon Quality Improvement (CQI) was formally launched at Croydon University Hospital in 2019, however, with the onset of Covid and a two year hiatus, little progress was made. However with a new lease of life, enthusiasm and a revitalised team I have been leading the way since September 2021.
CQI offers an opportunity to take an innovative step forward together, to generate curiosity and constructively challenge ourselves to grow a culture of collaboration, compassion, communication, consistently good care and efficient services. We aim to deliver and embed system-wide continuous quality improvement, by using simple but effective methodology applied consistently across Croydon Health Services in the pursuit of achieving our overarching strategic vision and objectives. The reality of a CQI relies on its spread, adoption and engagement whilst ensuring that CQI is strategically aligned and our agenda is grounded within the organisational infrastructure and management systems.
It is an absolute privilege to to be part of the team, a member of this community and an employee within a National Health Service that recognises, values, supports, encourages and delivers continuous quality improvement. I therefor look forward to doing my bit to spread and embed the knowledge, skills, passion and enthusiasm for QI, contributing to and building networks and communities of like minded professionals and ultimately, shaping the future and sustainability of the NHS.

Early in-patient mobilisaton to reduce length of stay
Helping patients to get moving after an acute illness is a vital to recovery. Poor or delayed mobilisation is associated with negative physical & mental health & prolongued length of stay
Early referral for bone health management, preventing fragility fractures & hospitalisation
prevention is better than cure; we aim to improve timely access to bone health diagnostics and bone health management, preventing bone health deterioration and hospitalisation associated with osteoaporosis.
Radiology appointment confirmation; reducing “Did Not Attends” to maximise utilisation
An average of 650,000 monthly outpatient appointment slots are wasted in the NHS each month, leaving services underutilised and increasing waiting times for outpatient appointments. A simple call can help.
