Having an end-of-workday ritual helps you detach from your workday, as it signals to yoru brain that your workday is over.

    What’s yours?

    • This is a tricky one, isn’t it, when you consider hybrid or remote workers. I ran a survey during the lockdowns, with an admittedly small sample size (n=50), and the people reporting the highest levels of satisfaction with working from home regularly stated they were able to ‘switch off’ from work. Those in shared accommodation, or with caring responsibilities often less so.

But in terms of the article, a lot of the anecdotal evidence was that people who wanted more office time had rituals – the drive home, for example – that they sorely missed when closing a laptop lid, and leaving the breakfast bar! Those who adapted well to home working also, quite often, anecdotally, shared their own rituals for separating the two, and these ranged from leaving their home office and closing the door behind them, to packing up the folding table they’d perched their laptop on and leaving it in the corner!.
