This tool helps stroke survivors, their carers and staff to achieve a good arm position following a stroke.

Up to 70% of stroke survivors have reduced or no functional use of their arm following their stroke. Shoulder pain is present in up to 84% of patients and achieving a good arm position can help to prevent or reduce pain, contractures, pressure problems and respiratory complications.

The guidance for the correct arm position to adopt is not always clear, and this has resulted in inconsistency across clinical practice.

The Stroke Arm Position Tool was the result of QI project and using this tool demostrated improvements in the consistancy in acheiving the correct position.
