I am a newly appointed paediatric anaesthetist with an interest in QI, human factors and education. I have led a number of successful QI projects both in the UK and abroad. I am the QI lead for the Association for Paediatric Anaesthetists.

My most recent project at Westmead children's hospital has resulted in sustained improvement in the care children receive on the oncology treatment centre anaesthesia list. Here sustained increase in the number of lists starting on time was achieved by using a mixture of QI and Human factors methodologies. Together in a disciplinary team we used task analysis to identify the areas for improvement and to aim to start all lists on time. 80% of lists now do so and has been sustained since I left the organisation in August 2016.

I am studying for a masters in Human factors and patient safety having completed to diploma level so far with Plymouth University. These links with the university are invaluable. I am planning my dissertation year and hope to include elements of both QI and human factors.

As a trainee I led Southwest Anaesthesia Research Matrix for 18 months. This is the first trainee led research network in the country from whom other networks have modelled themselves. I led SWARM to publish its first peer reviewed study in anaesthesia and commenced the first trainee led RCT (CUPPA) who were awarded a NIAA grant. I am very proud of SWARMs achievement as BMJ anaesthesia team of the year 2016. Without the hard work of the anaesthetic trainees in the southwest this would not have been achieved. Though this work I understand the importance of networks and the support they bring and the resource that trainees are in the workforce.
