I have over 33+ year career in healthcare focusing on system redesign, culture change and patient flow. I have extensive experience in People Management , Governance, Audit and risk, Health, Patient Safety and Wellbeing, Industry and partnerships (including with local universities), Finance , Legal, Statutory and Regulatory affairs.
I am currently the Director of Unscheduled Care within the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust since October 2019, and previously 12 years experience working at a CoDirector Level. I am responsible for the RVH & Mater Adult Emergency Departments, and a range of Acute & Regional Medicine Specialties. I am personally responsible for an annual budget of £260 million and 3,500 staff employees ( doctors, nurses, clinical physiologists & admin staff). I am currently a member of both the Belfast Trust “Executive Team” & “Trust Board”.
I was educated at Cambridge House Boys Grammar in Ballymena and received a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Ulster in 1991. I have a Masters in Health and Social Care Management and more recently have also completed a Master in Executive Leadership (awarded with Distinction) (Boston College (USA), Irishtimestraining in Dublin and Ulster University Business School).
I have extensive experience applying change management approaches, tools and methods , eg defining the vision and case for change, leadership, behaviour and organisational culture alignment, stakeholder engagement and communications, digital transformation tools, role mapping, PDSA, Kurt-Lewin, Kotter, appreciative inquiry, team coaching, managing the benefits realization processes etc.
