Exploring the potential for AI in health care improvement

AI technologies are advancing rapidly. Yet, when it comes to AI in health care, we’re still in the early stages. The Health Foundation has been exploring the question of what’s possible. This session from August 2024 gives an accessible overview of AI and how it can be applied in health care.

AI, quality and safety: implications for QI methods

In July 2025, Jeff Rakover, the Director of Innovation at Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and Marina Renton, former research assistant at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, led a workshop discussing their recent research on the implications of AI for Quality Management Systems. During this workshop, participants discussed research and looked at related examples, providing valuable insights into how AI can transform quality management practices.

AI adoption in the NHS in London

Published by the Health Foundation in collaboration with UCL Partners, this article gives an overview of the state of AI adoption in the NHS in London. Amid a growing spotlight on AI’s potential to transform health care, the report examines how AI is currently being used, identifies key challenges and outlines the collaborative approach needed for responsible and scalable AI adoption across the NHS.

Tech to save time

With the NHS under unprecedented pressure, there is a strong focus on the potential for technology to support NHS staff and free up their time. However, the NHS often faces challenges in fully realising the benefits technology can offer. Drawing on the Health Foundation’s own research and a rapid evidence review by The Evidence Centre, this analysis explores situations where health technologies have had no or negative impact on staff time and investigates why.

The analysis challenges the assumption that the procurement of technology will automatically lead to benefits such as freeing up staff time or improving care. It highlights that programmes to roll out technologies instead require greater focus on implementation and optimisation.

Spotlight on tech: what’s needed to support the digital shift

How can AI, digital technology and data fulfil their potential in health and care? This article explores what’s needed to support the digital shift, including a piece on ambient voice technology.

On the cusp: early insights on non-clinical AI in the NHS

This blog shares early insights on the use of non-clinical applications of AI in the NHS.

Ways to connect

Q’s Digital, Data and AI online group

Q has a large number of member-led online groups. These are a place to connect, share learning and insights, energise and inspire. They are open to all.

Why not join our Digital, Data and AI online group? In this group, you can meet others interested in AI, and perhaps share something you’ve learned or ask a question you’re curious about.

Artificial Intelligence Ambassadors Network

Beyond Q and the Health Foundation, you can also access membership for the Artificial Intelligence Ambassador Network. This is a new learning forum for health and social care professionals and those interested in AI in health care to share their ideas and practical applications of AI with others. The network supports learning, capability building and the delivery of AI across health and care systems while encouraging safe, inclusive spaces for members to be involved and influence embedding AI locally and nationally.
