South West Q Community Masterclass: Coaching, Mentoring and Positively Supporting Others with Improvement

The South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN) is holding its second regional event to bring together the new members of Q. This event will continue to develop ideas and thinking, based around the core themes of Engage-Connect-Commit from the successful ‘Welcome to Q’ event. The day will be shaped around some of the key elements in the Health Foundation’s Q Compact. This document sets out the expectations of Q members, along with feedback from improvers which states one area to focus on developing, refreshing and enhancing skills and understanding is in ‘Coaching, Mentoring and Positively Supporting Others with Improvement’.

The day will include the following:

Morning session

An introduction to Coaching and Mentoring in the context of being a Q member – where these are similar and how to spot the differences
The importance of a strengths based approach (Appreciative Inquiry) and how this works in practice and has a positive impact

Afternoon session

Identifying the skills for supporting others with improvement and holding effective Coaching and Mentoring conversations
Using the GROW model as a framework for a Coaching or Mentoring conversation in the work place
Learn the skills and capabilites to use this method confidently in your work place

The day will be highly interactive and participative, involving short presentations and sessions of working in small groups. Attendees will have the opportunity to apply and practice some of their skills during the practical sessions.

There will also be time to; update and catch up on the wider development of the Q Community, hear from a fellow Q Member on their work and progress with improvement, and network and connect with Q colleagues.

The day will be led and facilitated by members of the SW AHSN Improvement Hub and other Q Partners. Improvement experts will also be present to help further your knowledge and answer any questions which may arise.
