This was the second event in our new Community Space workshop series. We explored the impact of backlogs in health and care services on staff and service recovery and worked through some of the learning and practical insights to help respond to this challenge.
The number of people waiting to access treatment and support from health and care services is higher than it’s ever been. We know there is a lot currently happening across the health and care system to address the challenges of backlogs and long waiting times, and we also know that this issue isn’t new. Yet, improvement can play an important role in providing solutions to improving access to services and addressing backlogs in care. Not only through technical methods and tools for managing demand and capacity, but also by using improvement skills and approaches to unlock the potential of the people who can jointly create change.
During this workshop we heard case studies from some members who have been facing these challenges. We then spent time in small breakout group discussions, using the liberating structure Troika Consulting, to share experiences with fellow members from across the UK and Ireland. Members brought a challenge that they are currently facing around backlogs and service recovery, to discuss and collaborate on with others.

What is Community Space?
Community space is a new series of interactive workshops aiming to provide you with a compassionate, collaborative and supportive environment to explore challenges and opportunities. It’s a space where we will support you to reflect on and share what you have learned during the pandemic and explore how you can bring together the needs of staff and service recovery in your improvement work.
For this year, Community Space is being trialled in the place of the Q Community Event, following some requests to provide shorter and more regular events for members. We hope that this series will carry the spirit of the Community Event and will enable more members to connect across the series.
