Hi all,
Is anyone on here using data in the refreshed drive to reduce health inequalities? My work has become very inequalities-oriented in recent months, which is great – but I don’t want to be reinventing the wheel if there are insights and findings that we can share.
Also, is anyone moving beyond inequalities in access and processes to clinical…Read more -

Hi, I wondered if anybody has performed a ‘monitors and measures’ workshop? I’ve been asked to co-run one and am looking for ideas for a practical group session. Total allowed workshop time is 60mins so would want the practical element to last maybe 30ish mins
thanks in Advance…-
Hi Richard, hope you are well. I have ran a fair few of these kinds of sessions and I guess I’d ask at what level the delegates are at? This will then perhaps lead to the possibilities of something interactive.
-
Hi Stuart,
Thanks for your rely, my audience will all be healthcare scientists so will be very data driven. The initial aim is to provide an introduction and spark discussion
Thanks Very Much for your help

Hi Richard,
I developed and delivered two Measurement for Improvement modules, one full-day for clinicians, executives, commissioners and managers, and a half day module to introduce data experts, analysts and researchers to QI and measurement. I’d be very happy to help.
Best,
Thomas

Hi again Richard… so depending on their experiences of measurement for improvement (I am making an assumption that this will be limited), I think it would be really helpful for them to understand the differences in types of measurement – I often spend some time on Leif Solberg et al’s ‘3 Faces of Measurement’. Once they are comfortable with…Read more

Hi Stuart and Thomas,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, would greatly appreciate any and all help you could give please. and will certainly look at the 3 faces of measurement
Thanks

Feel free to get in touch directly Richard if a chat would help, my email is stuart.clough@srft.nhs.uk – we can work out a time or whatever from there…

It depends on the audience and what you are attempting to achieve in terms of learning outcomes. One I have used a lot for beginners is the Post It Note game … it just requires post-it notes, a coin, and a clock (e.g. stopwatch on a mobile phone) and can be used to generate raw data that can be plotted as before and after improvement run…Read more

Hi Simon,
Thanks for your reply, this idea sounds like it would appeal to my audience as they will all be healthcare scientists so very data driven. The aim is really to provide an introduction rather than anything else. My direct email is Richard.whitlam@hey.nhs.uk.
thanks very much for your help

Hi Richard, OK I’ll email you the instructions – it is designed as an introduction. With regards, Simon

Hi Richard
The most engaging measurement activity I have taken part in during a QI training session involved making paper aeroplanes and measuring flight distance. Doesn’t generate a huge amount of data but teaches on sources of and reducing variation and generates a very simple SPC chart with a shift.
If you’re interested then I might be able to…Read more-
Hi Anton,

Thanks Louise, great video. Love the simplicity of the ideas, start small with one simple thing etc. I’m particularly interested in qualitative information gathering, especially around psychological/emotional wellbeing. Have you any formal tools in those areas that you can point me towards?

Does it have to be in the Irish context specifically? If so, perhaps @maureen-alice-flynn or @noemipalacios know somebody?

No @joriamramos not Ireland specifically. I was just letting people know that I was based in Ireland. Happy to be advised internationalyl!

I am a pain management consultant based up in sunny Stockport. I am also the clinical lead for our bijou pain service. We’ve undertaken a revamp of our triage and 1st POC system over the last year.

I thought I’d share an upcoming Q Zoom, that could be relevant to your challenge.

Hi Matthew,
Thank you for these links. I hadn’t heard of the Vanguard system and look forward to seeing how we can apply it to our project. -
I think Vanguard is just a system-orientated approach inspired by the QI pioneer Deming, but applied to public services rather than the industry side that lots of QI originated in.
Something like that anyway. We can find out the details when when we hear from the team In Lincolnshire, I guess….

Hey David, you could also search for ‘pain’ as a keyword in the member directory. As I’ve done here: https://q.health.org.uk/community/directory/?biro-orderby=last_activity&biro-aoi=&biro-location=&biro-s=pain
You might be able to spot a few fellow members who’d be able to help you with your questions and then reach out to them?

I’m looking to publish a quality improvement report in BMJ Open Quality. I know the lead time to publish can be slow – I am a reviewer myself.
Is there anyone here who would be kind enough to put themselves forward as a preferred reviewer to expedite the publication? Happy to do so for others.

I can’t remember how I was added as a reviewer – it has been a few years! First thing to do would be to use the link above and sign up as an author on the manuscript site. I think at that stage you would identify your specialist interests (e.g. QI, Paediatrics etc). If the reviewer…Read more

Hi, I’ve just published something using hospital level SPC charts with weekly data points over a 6 month period. Some hospitals only submitted data for a few of those weeks, and are now frustrated that they don’t have a mean for the period. Obviously they shouldn’t get the full SPC experience, but I was wondering if you would consider giving a…Read more
-
Mmmmm. I’ve had varying experience with SPC in a number of hospitals. By reverting to using a mean based on a small number of results kinda defeats the object! I think the problem is getting Trust boards etc to accept things like special cause variation and not kicking off a whole raft of work based on an outlying result. Its almost a cultural thing.
-
Hi Sam, you can give a mean for a one point sample if you want … the caveat is that the smaller the sample size the more fuzzy that estimate is of the true value of the mean; and the degree of fuzziness also depends on the variation over time in the system being measured, how the data is sampled, and any measurement errors incurred. One problem…Read more

Hello,
For me no, I wouldn’t and I think there’s heaps of learning in there for the centres. I see it as an opportunity to revisit the SPC charts and their purpose for them. If you give the mean then I don’t think that learning will happen. An opportunity for frustration to turn to curiosity? Signpost to plot the dots https…Read more

Hi all,
I’m wondering if anyone has done any work using Goal Based Outcomes and mapping it against the National Outcomes Framework. Would love not to reinvent the wheel if others have already done this work. Thanks.-
There are quite a lot of work on individualised outcome measures. We have developed one we call PSO (Person-specific outcomes). It is currently in the peer-review process, but I can semd you details if you wish.
