Biography

Professor Tom Bourne is Professor of Practice and research team leader at Imperial College London and Consultant Gynaecologist at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital London. He is visiting Professor and consultant at KU Leuven in Belgium. He is considered an international authority on the use of ultrasound for the assessment of gynecological disorders as well as the management of early pregnancy complications. He is also involved in research relating to the psychological impact of medical accidents and complaints on physicians as well as physician burnout.
His attended the Middlesex Hospital medical school, University of London. As a resident he worked in the emergency department at Bristol Royal Infirmary and the neonatal intensive care unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. He then trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St Mary’s Manchester and in the Gloucester Royal Infirmary. In 1989 he was introduced to ultrasonography when he took up a post at Kings College London as research fellow, lecturer and hon senior registrar under Professor Stuart Campbell. In 1994 he moved to Sahlgrenska Hospital at the University of Göteborg in Sweden on a Swedish Medical Research Council (MRC) visiting scientist fellowship. In Sweden he initiated research into ovarian function and gynecological ultrasound with Seth Granberg. He wrote his Ph.D. on aspects of the early detection of ovarian and endometrial carcinoma mainly in relation to ultrasound and biomarkers. Following this he furthered his endoscopic surgical training working with Olav Istre in Norway and Jan Deprest in Belgium before returning to the UK.
He was appointed Senior Lecturer and consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at St George's, University of London from 1996 to 2007 where he developed and was clinical lead for the early pregnancy and acute gynaecology unit as well as clinical director for the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 2000 to 2006. He became MRCOG in 1990 and FRCOG in 2003. He was conferred the title of Reader in acute gynecology and gynecological ultrasonography in 2005 at the University of London. He was appointed visiting consultant and Professor at KU Leuven, Belgium in 2007 working primarily with Dirk Timmerman, Ignace Vergote and Jan Deprest. In September 2008 he took up his current post with Imperial College NHS trust at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital, London.
He has edited seven books including the classic textbook Dewhurst’s, published over 330 papers in international journals and been invited to speak and chair at numerous international meetings on subjects relating to early pregnancy, the use of ultrasound and diagnostics in gynaecology as well as the physician wellbeing. He has published extensively in the field of early pregnancy care, leading to changes in guidelines internationally to the criteria used to diagnose miscarriage, as well as the diagnosis of ovarian and endometrial pathology. His h-index is 77 with Google Scholar and 52 with Web of Science.

He is on the scientific committee and was elected as treasurer on the executive committee of the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) in 2015, having been on the board for several years. He was elected president of ISUOG in 2017 and will begin his term in 2019. He is on the scientific committee of ISUOG and at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). He is a medical advisor and also trustee of the UK patient group, the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. He was elected President of the UK Association of Early Pregnancy Units (AEPU) in 2014 and was re-elected in 2017. He is a member of the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) panel of experts. He is a specialist advisor to NICE on pain and bleeding in early pregnancy. He is co-founder and sits on the steering committee of the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) and International Endometrial Tumor Analysis (IETA) trials – two of the largest diagnostic trials in the world with over 25,000 recruits as well as multicentre trials examining imaging for endometriosis and myometrial pathology.

He is a research team leader at Imperial College London and PI for several trials including EPOS (early pregnancy events), ABPEP (ectopic pregnancy and PUL), HIP (outpatient management of hyperemesis) and PIEPE (psychological impact of miscarriage). He was a member of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) consensus panel in the USA to develop safe guidelines for diagnosing early pregnancy failure in 2012, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) consensus panel on guidelines for diagnosing ovarian pathology in 2014, and currently sits on the American College of Radiologists (ACR) panel to develop a consensus on the management of ovarian pathology. In 2015 he was one of the few UK doctors to be elected an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). In 2016 he was made an honorary fellow of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM). In 2016 he joined the management committee as director of early pregnancy research of the new Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research – linking the Universities of Birmingham, Warwick and Imperial College London. In 2017 he was appointed chair of the early pregnancy Clinical Study Group of the RCOG and also sits on the research committee at the RCOG. He also sits on the program development committee for the RCOG world congress. He is a member of the RCOG task force on “supporting our doctors”.

His current principal research interests relate to ultrasound, biomarkers (including microbiome and metabolomics) and translational research in early pregnancy as well as the classification of ovarian and endometrial tumours. He also has published and speaks on the impact of complaints and medical regulation on doctor’s welfare and clinical practice.

He lives between London and the Sussex countryside, and is married with two daughters. Outside medicine his interests include: sailing, playing cricket, road cycling, rugby, drumming, politics, theatre, cinema, and the visual arts.
