Biography

My current role is as service lead of the Barnsley Assistive Technology team. I have developed the team to become a recognised leader in the field with an international reputation for quality.  The team provides NHS England commissioned specialised services for Augmentative Communication (AAC) and Environmental Control (EC) across the Yorkshire and Humber region of the UK (population ~5.5m).

I was significantly involved in the national service changes that led to NHS England commissioning of AAC and EC services. Research that I carried out was cited in the service specifications and I was heavily involved in the national bodies in campaigning, developing and implementing the service changes which resulted in approx. £30m increased funding.

I am an honorary research fellow at the University of Sheffield and collaborate on a number of research projects as co-applicant. I have been involved in successful funding applications to the value of over £2m in the last five years. I have published a wide range of research in a range of peer reviewed journals and presented at key national and international conferences. My work aims to have impact in the assistive technology field and for individuals who use this technology.  One of my publications was included in the ScHaRR REF submission, my work has also impacted policy development and was cited in the NHS England service specification and convergence funding process.

My research experience covers a range of areas and themes including: AAC and communication aid design and decision making; user involvement in the design of assistive technology; and health service research relating to assistive technology provision. My research encompasses electronic assistive technology, with a focus on communication and access for those with disabilities.
