Biography

Medical director at the Golden Jubilee Foundation (comprising a hospital, a research institute, an innovation centre and a hotel). The hospital hosts several national services (Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure Service, Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service, Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit), the regional cardiothoracic and interventional cardiology centre and a high volume elective centre for orthopaedics, ophthalmology, endoscopy and imaging.

Co-vice chair of the Scottish Medicines Consortium. Chair of the New Drugs Committee. Scotland’s health technology assessment agency for all new medicines. Postgraduate certificate in health economics from Aberdeen University.

Graduated from Glasgow University in medicine and physiology. Trained in medicine and nephrology in the West of Scotland, with a brief RCPSG travelling fellowship to Northwest Kidney Centers in Seattle with Prof Chris Blagg. Consultant physician and nephrologist for 15 years in NHS Ayrshire & Arran. Main interests were chronic kidney disease and haemodialysis (home therapies and haemodiafiltration).

Involved in research since undergraduate days. Broad experience from basic science to clinical trials to population studies. National Kidney Research Foundation research fellow with Prof Andrew Bradley at Glasgow University. Enjoyed clinical research. Least successful at molecular immunology. Most successful at epidemiology.

Became a clinical director reluctantly to solve service problems. Took a while to learn that there was more to leadership than command and control. Joined GenerationQ cohort 1 and will be forever grateful to the Health Foundation and Ashridge for that life changing experience. Still learning (though never was good at journaling!). Focussed on person centred care for my MSc project using a qualitative approach. Still a priority for me, as I experience more healthcare personally and through my family.

Discovered exercise in 2016. Thought I could swim, now learning crawl. Bought a road bike. Learning to run between injuries. Baby triathlete. Recently discovered weights - apparently squatting 10kg isn’t that impressive...
