My role as Director of the NMPDU is to provide leadership, support excellence and build capacity within nursing and midwifery to enhance patient care and service delivery. I also respond to and support the implementation of the strategic and high level business plan of the office of the Nursing and Midwifery Service Directorate (ONMSD). Prior to my current appointment I was the Director of the Centre of Nurse and Midwifery Education (CNME), Mayo / Roscommon. I supported Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for Registered nurses and midwives in both Counties. From 2013 to 2015 I was the Director of Nursing and Midwifery (DONM) in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe. I was Acting Director of Nursing in Roscommon University Hospital from 2010 to 2015 and oversaw the reconfiguration of the hospital.
I have completed The Myers Briggs Type Indicator step 1 Programme and a Diploma in Executive coaching. I am always looking for new ways of working that supports national objectives and national standards. I work with staff to develop and enhance services with a focus on the patient and best clinical outcomes. There are many demands within the health service environment and nurses and midwives need to take the initiative to be involved and lead out on change. Change can be difficult but from experience I feel it is time to stop worrying about it – with change comes the knowledge that change is manageable.
I have a passion for nursing and could not contemplate a different career. I use proactive leadership to develop staff and generate a culture of teamwork and collaboration to promote person centred care.
