I have found that it is common to see these terms used interchangeably in the NHS. I have also found it helpful to differentiate them, as it is often assumed that if you are using QI then you are doing CI, but that isn’t usually the case. CI requires a systematic approach to using QI methods as part of normal operational management, alongside…Read more

Thanks Matthew – sounds interesting. I like the river diagram approach. Might need someone to hold the ring on it but it is a good way to connect with knowledgeable colleagues.

Hi Jennie,
Let me know how you get on. I’d be keen to know if there is a gap in this area more generally as have been considering something like the Quality Coach Development Programme project (https://q.health.org.uk/resource/quality-coach-development-programme/), but for improvement leadership. If there is already something we can use then that…Read more

Thanks Tom. I’m trying to get hold of a copy of the new standard. Just battling with procurement processes so haven’t managed it yet!

Is anyone currently developing/revising a leadership for improvement programme? Following the launch of NHS Impact, we are starting to revise our internal leadership development offering to support the development of the knowledge, skills and behaviours of managers in supporting a whole organisational approach to improvement.
NHSE are leading the…Read more

Thanks Tom – helpful as ever. I am signed up. Very interested to find out more about this latest standard. Looks to be much more relevant than ISO9001:2015.

That sounds like a great idea Sid.
Now that there is no longer free QI training available it might be useful to develop something like this. Especially if the NHS is to train improvement capability at scale with a limited budget.
Would you be thinking of a model that is adaptable to context (similar to the coach programme), or a one-size fits…Read more

Clauses 9 and 10 of the new healthcare QMS standard would be a good guide. They are a good initial design/implementation starting point for a QMS/SMS.
Thanks Tom. I’m trying to get hold of a copy of the new standard. Just battling with procurement processes so haven’t managed it yet!
Hi Jem – a somewhat related issue: any idea if a peer-to-peer learning approach is being developed so different ICSs can learn from each other, in the most targeted way, around NHS IMPACT?
Q member Chris Collison – who led the Q Exchange project on the QI capabilities framework – showed me how the NHS IMPACT self-assessment framework/results can…Read more
The North East and Yorkshire part of NHSEI are pulling together a regional conversation on Impact – I would imagine others will be doing the same
Hi Sarah – thanks, that’s interesting to hear. Do you know anyone I could get in touch with who’s involved in pulling that regional conversation together…?
Thanks Matthew – sounds interesting. I like the river diagram approach. Might need someone to hold the ring on it but it is a good way to connect with knowledgeable colleagues.
We are having similar conversations up in Cheshire and Merseyside about this Matthew. We’ve done some high level scoping of what each provider has but nothing further than that at this stage. If you would like to send me your email address I’ll join you up with our ICB colleagues? @liamjohndoyle
