Diagnosed with HIV in 1991, Garry has championed patient involvement and peer support since co-founding the Bloomsbury Network in 1999.
In 2003 he became the Bloomsbury Clinic’s first paid Patient Representative while coordinating the YMCA Positive Health HIV exercise referral programme. He then spent seven years as Membership & Involvement Officer and Service Lead for the myHIV online support services at Terrence Higgins Trust.
In 2015 he moved to Positively UK to coordinate the Project 100 national HIV peer mentor training programme, stepped up as Joint Interim CEO from 2018-19 and then became Lead for Peer Learning, Partnerships and Policy. Alongside delivery of peer-led training programmes, he managed the Fast-Track Cities London ChelWest Peer Support Integration Project and Empowerment Programme to address internalized HIV stigma.
In April ‘23 he was seconded to the National AIDS Trust, as Senior Programme Manager for the FTC London HIV Charter Mark, to deliver training, policies and accreditation to increase knowledge of HIV and reduce stigma and discrimination in organisations and the public.
In September 2023 he rejoined the NHS, as Programme Manager for Transformation Partners in Health & Care, to oversee London’s Fast-Track Cities (FTC) improvement collaborative projects to integrate voluntary sector peer support workers in every London HIV clinic.
Garry has served as Chair of the UK CAB and as a community representative on committees for BHIVA, BASHH, BMA, NHSE’s HIV CRG and London’s FTCI Leadership Group and HIV Clinical Forum. He currently sits on the NHIVNA Executive.
